There was one year we were so broke that the four of us along with some friends who were also in dire times dug into our own belongings to give gifts to each other. Really, that Christmas was so special in a way because the gifts took so much thought, and in some cases, sacrifice to give the other person something that the other would appreciate. I think we all learned about the spirit of giving that year.

People look at me oddly when I tell them that I do all my holiday shopping at Kroger. That is because I like to give food gifts, and they are always appreciated. Consumables are always good things to give.

I have such a 'deep' pantry that even when I am broke, I can still come up with something delicious as a gift.
