I swear, the only way the shooting in VA could get any more sensational would be if the shooter had been female. Seriously. I have a lot of respect for the authorities there right now, not releasing anything more than gender. Not even wild guesses.

The hyperbole is just amazing. Just.

Go check the number of people killed on the freeways today - if you can. What, that isn't a lot of people in one place? Does it matter?

Dead is dead. Dead is forever.

And dead is very much one life at a time - you remember when one person losing their life MEANT something?

Some folks are not going home tonight. And some folks are going home tonight, less one person they loved very dearly in their lives.

How it happened doesn't matter.

It happens every day.

And every day - every time - it matters. Just not to you - or me - every time.

Keep that tucked away someplace. The same place where you keep your musings on what you would do if you really REALLY got angry at someone. Angry enough to take a gun to a public place to use it.

...and hope you remember it matters.

I have buddies, and the ape has his child in VA, but fortunately everyone we know is a-ok.

I'm appauled that this person was able to hurt so many people unchecked for as long as he was. It's also disturbing to wonder what motivated this. I know the social conservatives will blame video games, or rap music, or something like that... but you know there's more to it. Either he was straight out crazy, or there was some sad story in his background that drove him to this. Maybe we'll never know.

It just makes you wonder... about so many, many things.

Someone had the balls to mention that a bill to allow guns on this campus died in committee within the last year - as if arming the entire campus would have put this guy "in his place real damn quick" -

Yanno. Instead of one guy firing at everything that moved, everyone could have been firing wildly at everything that moved. Yup. Progress!

I'm going to go play with my Sims.

This is the south, I'm not surprised. Exhasperated, unhappy, yes.

Sometimes it seems like we're going backwards, doesn't it? I hate guns. They're one of the worst things humans have invented. Moreover though, I hate how people are left to suffer and fester until things like this happen.

THIS PLACE SUCKS AAAHHHH. The trouble is, I don't know many places in the world where it's any better!

"Dead is dead. Dead is forever."

I wish, more than anything, that this message could reach every young person on the planet.

For so many, it's just a game. It's just something to do.

I'm heartsick, for everyone involved.

All I can do is pray that those who lost their lives this day find peace, and that those who loved them can find comfort.

Like a friend of mine said, guns should be cheap. It's the friggen bullets that should cost an arm and a leg to buy.

Exactly! I was talking to my son about the very same thing while we watched the news.

Yes, you make sense...

But it isn't a hyperbole if you live here, if this is your town, if you are feeling numbed because the entire world is watching what was once your peaceful haven.

Because I do, it is, and I can't breathe.

I'm sorry, hon. It only takes one misguided soul to really make a whole race question what they take for granted. NEED to take for granted. Hang onto that, in the days ahead. One person can take it apart - people coming together will make it right again. It's the only thing that does.

There's a reason they say it's hard to understand...it's impossible, to put a fine point on it. Hard, implies if you put effort towards it, you'd find a way.

Find ways to make yourself (and others around you) feel safe - work your community building steps, hang in there and I am so sorry. So very, very sorry.

"...could get any more sensational..."

Like Columbine? Remember, the media lives on sensationalism, not facts.

In a morbid sense I can't help but be amazed and curious as to who the hell he was. It's uncommon for there to be more deaths than injuries in this sort of situation usually, and to do it with 9mm handguns is even more astonishing, given the comparatively low lethality of those when held up against other caliber weapons. *shakes head* Gah. Regardless, it's a horrific situation, and I don't think anyone who's got a shred of humanity and heard of it is going to sleep well tonight.
