I blame it on growing up in Michigan, and regularly driving through wooded areas where the smell was ever-present. Heck, I actually consider it to be a comforting scent.

Skunks visit our patio daily. They usually go after any leftover cat food that our outdoor kitty has neglected to finish, and then for water and any bugs they can find. They don't usually leave a scent behind though, unless two skunks get into a fight. They seem to tolerate the outdoor cat too, since he will just lay there and watch them.
