Someone smelled Healthy White Babies Available If We Can Talk Them Into Giving Them Up GIMME ME ONE I ASKED FIRST and the resultant literative mosh pit is just the most amazing amount of dramafest I have seen in years....

Adoption, coercion, teenage pregnancy, teenage parenting, welfare fraud...group discounts on abortions...it's just freaking amazing.

One could easily go deaf trying to listen to it all.

And ya wonder why adoption ends up being such an emotionally charged issue. Bad enough as a concept - look at what you find under the surface of the average Joe/Jane reading the newspaper. SHEESH.

Better yet, I can see the principle that "you can change people if you just argue with them on the Internet enough" is alive and well.

I don't know what's worse...that there's someone out there so self-centered to write that piece of condesending crap, or that the paper published it thinking it was a good idea.

I think I can almost hold the paper blameless. Look at the interest and education this provided. Seriously.

Person who started the whole mess?

Hope every adoption scammer visits her email box. Really really.

You haven't run into the Adoption Experts, either. Oh Gawd. One such imperiously informed us that we sad idiots should have filed away the info about the twins until they were adults, and then pass it on and let them figure it all out.

Seriously, it's about as emotionally charged an issue as you can possibly imagine.

Don't tell me, let me guess. The *exact* same thing had happened to them!

*crickets*

Thought so.

I don't know why they call it common sense. Sure ain't common.

Yeah.

Gloucester is only a few miles north of where I grew up and went to high school.

We wish it were getting better attention right now.

17 women, mostly sophomores. Can we stop the abstinence only education now?!

Yeah, when IVF wasn't going so well I read up tons on adoption and it can be a scary world. That's why it would piss me off so much when people with easily conceived kids of their own (because nobody who has been through any of this would say such stupid things) would say, "Why don't you just adopt?" as if it was like going down to Babies R Us and picking one off of the shelf.

My favourite idiocies are the ones related to race. If, as a white couple, we adopted a black child (which we were totally open to), we would always deal with two prevalent attitudes: 1) the so-called liberals would say, "Oh isn't it nice of you to have adopted that poor unwanted black baby, isn't it just awful the way all of those black teenagers get pregnant, the young men always run off you know, and it's so nice that you're going to give them a much better life than they could have had in their impoverished community, and are they a crack baby?" and 2) the more overt right-wing racists would say, "Well, it's clearly not yours and they'll never fit in properly anywhere. Are they a crack baby?"

And then there's the big fun of being judged by black people for having stolen a child from their community and not raising it with sufficient ties to its African roots or whatever.

BTW I was skimming back through your adoption posts because I wanted to see how you were doing with all of that since I haven't read flist during our whole move nonsense. I gather you're at the filled-in-all-the-papers-and-waiting stage?

We've gotten a referral - a SN placement from Taiwan ([livejournal.com profile] xanxanbell) - right now, getting the finishing touches for the dossier to go into the courts. Should be opening the case within the next month or so.
