Cheer me up.
Nov. 26th, 2008 11:04 amI just found out what happened to the loan I took against my 401K when I left last gig.
I had 90 days to pay it back, in full. (UH.)
If I had that lying around, I surely would not be making payments on it, bubbie.
So - it goes to default, probably hits my credit report, will definitely be reported as a distribution and I'll get taxed on it...yadda ya.
OUCH.
Yes, I truly thought that job would last forever. Silly me.
When I think of where we were in April and where we are now?
Not stupid. Just couldn't predict the future.
And who got to do what to ask for billions in bailouts?
Riiiight.

Date: 2008-11-26 07:39 pm (UTC)I'm more unsure of why it would go to default. Maybe they can take the money out of your 401(k) plan?

Date: 2008-11-28 05:59 pm (UTC)All taxies must be registered and show the driver's picture and name prominently displayed on the back of the front seat, along with their registration number. The prominently displayed electronic meter is what you have to pay the driver (you'll hear it tick every once in a while). Don't ask the driver how much - Melanie tried that and the driver said "400" in English when the meter obviously said NT$195 - she rolled her eyes at him and gave him NT$200 and asked for change. :P Tips are not expected. Be aware this was my experience in Taipei - I don't know how well it translates to Tainan.
Buses really wouldn't do the trick. I wouldn't suggest a rental car.
I would suggest calling hotels or doing reservations on-line after doing some searches. Here's an example of a site that lists hotels and offers prices in a certain range like $127:
http://www.asiatravel.com/taiwan/tainan/
But if you look at the company's web site itself, you can see the prices are cheaper, like under $100 (and this is a really nice hotel):
