Balancing act here, guys.

At the new gig, there's a guitar player making a living as a kick-ass programmer who puts all kinds of awesome on the network.

And he has an incredible memory and equally good taste in awesome.

We were talking about the Smothers Brothers this morning. We ended up there after having to listen to hold music torture - and I was naming and dating the songs. (SAD.)

And he told me what he remembered.

And then pointed me at the song. On the network drive.

Awesome awesome awesome. Here, have some of it. 60's vintage, and yes - it's over ten minutes long.

MORE COWBELL THAN YOU CAN HANDLE.

Chambers Brothers - Time Has Come Today

Yes, I am in the right place.

Now, if I can just stop getting kicked in the teeth everytime old gig comes back to haunt me....

I was just listening to The Chambers Brothers The Time Has Come Today album on my iTunes this morning. A band that's unjustly overlooked these days. Had the opportunity to play a couple of gigs with Lester Chambers some years back. What a voice!

Well, when I say "some time ago", we're talking 25 years or so, so it's been a good while since I've seen Lester. I was playing for a short while with bassist Harvey Brooks (The Doors, Electric Flag, Miles Davis, among many others), and Lester was a friend of Harvey's. We did a handful of gigs backing him. I was just the guitar player in the band, and I doubt that he would remember me.

Looks like Lester's living in Studio City these days. Have to keep an eye open for local gigs.

I've got this live album called Tell Us the Truth that finds him playing with Steve Earle, Billy Bragg, rapper Boots Riley from The Coup, and others back in 2004, and the dude's still got an amazing voice.

I'd say that album is what tipped me off to The Chambers Brothers, but actually, it was my first Steve Earle concert -- he ended the show with a cover of "Time Has Come Today," which I initially thought was an Animals song that just wasn't on any of their greatest-hits albums for some reason.

But yeah, I've since then gotten myself schooled on their music, and I'm in awe of you getting to gig with Lester.

Kepp it coming
