Was Haiti only last year?

I wake up this morning to find Sendai, Japan has almost been completely wiped out of existence.

I can only imagine how awful this is going to get before it gets better again.

But in this, I am certain. This is Japan. This is a place so well-prepared and experienced with earthquakes that Los Angeles turns to no other source for more experienced minds when making their disaster recovery plans.

There will be huge, heartbreaking losses. But it will get better again. That's what's happened before, and this is a place with long, long histories.

Mind you, an earthquake of this magnitude WILL kill, no way around it. And the numbers are horrific.

But it's orders of magnitude less than it could be. Prepared, compliant and educated. That's how you save lives in a tectonically active zone.

From my hotel window, I watched the comings and goings of trains day and night on a seven-track railway. Then there's the extensive and efficient subway system, which of course makes L.A.'s look like it was designed for a city the size of Bakersfield. As for auto traffic, it can be miserable, but commuters have alternatives. And I didn't see a single Hummer, the car of choice for Jaime de la Vega, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's deputy mayor of transportation. I'm willing to take up a collection and have both of them sent to Tokyo to take notes.

You don't have to love anime to find Tokyo amazing. Of course, I don't think he knows the why behind so much of the WIN he's finding...like the fact they don't have Hummers because you can't have them, for example...but it's amusing, nonetheless.
