Heard sirens in your neighborhood lately?

It's raining today, so the fire and police departments are really hustling. Water falling from the sky in Los Angeles = people losing their tiny little minds and forgetting how to drive. LOTS of accidents. LOTS of calls.

My service providers take such good care of me and mine. I live in the land of Emergency!, so flashy red fire trucks and HAWT firemen are no surprise...the station that served as the location for Station 51? Just down the street from home. I kid you not. Harbor-UCLA Medical Center? Rampart. Yup.

I can remember a world before paramedics, defibrillators and the like. I <3 Johnny and Roy. *slaps self*

I do think about my service providers often, and I take every opportunity I can to be good to them.

I've got to get that plate of cookies together and run it over to my local firehouse - that's one more thing I gotta get done.

It's dead simple, really. You got butter, flour and sugar? You got what you need for shortbread. Google it up and go for it.

Where's your local firehouse?

Well, Los Angeles' City website can tell you, but my preferred method is to look in the phone book and make a call or two.

Take some old books you aren't reading anymore, or magazines.

Say thanks.

And don't stop at the fire station. Got a walk-in clinic near you? A homeless shelter? Yes, even the police substation.

I remember one year Tommy and I went looking for the skid-row tour guide with cookies. (Didn't find him, dang it. He's been MIA since then. Hope he got a clue and a life....)

Make your own happiness - even if it's only for someone else. Notice.

And I'll see you tomorrow!

It wasn't until last month that it got explained to me that Emergency! was basically created to help explain WTF these "paramedic" guys were. Because I was 4? 5? when it aired, I took it for granted that Paramedics had always been part of the Fire Department... that it wasn't a proper fire station without a paramedic truck! I was watching the first season of Emergency! while we were at my friend's house. Dang!

I'm totally going to et that for BoyZilla, because he loved seeing all the firetrucks.

Dude. Fire trucks.

*chuckles* Mom was re-entry into nursing at about the same time - and she LOVED watching that show with us.

Oh very yes. And Los Angeles County was one of the first - if not THE first - to establish the paramedic program.

Now? Everyone has EMT training. What a world.

Back while I was still living in Southern California, I always remember a skit I saw -- I think it was on Saturday Night Live -- where it opened with upon a Los Angeles News Reporter. Who began speaking calmly enough, then said that it was raining. He then began running about the station like it was the end of the world, pulling out his hair and shrieking.

It was kinda appropriate. And still makes me laugh.

I had such a damned crush on Randy Mantooth you wouldn't believe. Did you know Dr. Early wrote "Route 66"? I was so jazzed to find that out. But when I watch reruns, I think, "Did I really grow up in an era that sexist?"
