Because the corker for this week of talking about weight and health issues?

Saturday morning, Jim wakes up at 5:00 with back pain - and not the 'oops, I shouldn't have picked up that 75 lbs of dogfood' pain.

Nope. Into the ER, and doctor starts saying the 'D' word. As in - disc injury.

He had an aunt die of an overdose of pain medication, after decades of being either in a wheelchair or in her bed, after surgery to resolve a disc injury SHE got on the job - just a couple of years ago. Nope, in her case, surgery didn't resolve it - but she was also close to 500 pounds and pretty content with the lifestyle, all reports...which also included a lot of 'sharing' of the meds, if catch my drift.

Her job? She'd been a RN. Back in the day.

...

So - Jim is off work, on Vicodin (which isn't holding him - he isn't pain-free, just more comfortable) and got to spend yesterday watching movies on the portable DVD player. In bed.

And I'm left with the entire list of things we both had for this weekend - and the foreseeable future.

So say I'm not amused is an understatement. This is not what I would want for him - and the upcoming events - you know, international travel and one of the biggest events in another little boy's life?

Worried is also not going to cover it.

I know you're somewhat local. This is who I just started seeing: Dr. Jeffrey Glaser, Glaser Pain Institute, 16311 Ventura Bl #775, Encino. 818.501.7246. I'm getting an epidural steriodal injection, with some selective nerve blocking, next Tuesday. He was recommended to me by my primary for my lower back pain. He used to be at http://www.spinalpainassociates.com/ (and his bio and info is still there), and opened up his new office in November.

I saw your reports last week - dude. Would this be your first one?

Mom's been doing them for years, after a synovial cyst issue - it works well, REALLY well. So - long term, not too concerned.

Short term? We be fucked. Yo.

Yup, it will be my first one.

I hope Jim gets better. If he needs someone to whine at, I'll commisurate. I know my wife complains of my whining (why does everyone seem to spell it whinging?)

I hope he recovers soon.

Do you have good contacts in Taiwan who speak English?

We expect people at the agency, and at immigration. Past that? Nope.

(Want to make some taxi cards for us? Also, when the court papers arrive, are you good enough to check them?)

Unfortunately I can't read nor write Chinese other than my name and a few other simple words.

You may want to contract with my dear cousin [livejournal.com profile] yusanni. She lives and works in Taipei full-time for the Canadian government and part-time as an instructor teaching English as a second language.

Although she is not trained as a lawyer, she does have a good grasp of Chinese and she did grow up speaking English. She is a good person who loves the Lord. If she has the time, she may be willing - at least for the taxi, maybe.

Been there, done that, still have residual skin numbness.

I hope he recovers quickly and fully.

ASAP, get an MRI and start with a rehabilitation physician. Some ASAP physical therapy could help him get control over this faster.
I have a herniated lumbar disk, and have major episodes with it from time to time, but usually I'm pretty OK these days. Did some pysical therapy and some chiropractic as well. My surgeon recommended that I delay surgery as long as I can, to wait for better technologies and techniques to come along.

I *pushed* for that Saturday and got denied. "You don't need to see the lion if you hear the lion." OKAY THEN.

Right now, the diagnosis is sciatica - which resolves 90% of the time on its own. Let's hope he's not THAT special right now.
