He's about 21.5, gay and knows where the closet is if he needs it, and can pass in a heartbeat for straight. He knows.

Having a quick chat yesterday, he posed the above question to me - and I asked how old the ladies he was talking about were?

Closer to my age? Oh, that's easy.

They've had to be straight first. It really SUCKS to be straight when you don't get anything out of it, I said.

I sent this link to him later in the day as an explanation.

If you have the luck to be gay, female and never had to be anything else before coming to that conclusion - it's highly unlikely you'd be as bitter as those who would resort to this kind of thing (Bacardi isn't manufacturing this stuff out of the ether, guys) to get laid.

*full body shivers* Ghad, this is offensive.

Sailor Jerry's is much better rum for a comparable price. Just sayin'.

Also? That Bacardi website has embedded auto-playing music. When will people learn?

Almost as offensive as the drink they're advertising.

Oh, and does it surprise anyone that the Israeli branch of the company did this, mostly as an in-country marketing promo? They're at about Japan's level when it comes to inadvertently commercialized institutionalized sexism, complete with over-exaggerated shrugging gesture, shiteating bastard smirk, and "what?! women can vote! women want to be pretty! this is fine!"

Offensive is putting it mildly.

*snort* By these rules, the little voice in my head saying that I am the ugly girlfriend is spot on.

to be fair, a lot of the "ugly" in that first pic is that hideous dress clashing with her skintone like a border dispute, and the other two are just really mean pictures.

so i'm guessing they're trying to sell to the "women that hate all other women, and themselves as well" crowd? 'cause i don't see that working either....

Oh Bacardi, thank you for making it that much easier to spend the extra bucks on Pyrat rum instead.

It more than offsets the time I will spend crafting the letter explaining why your products will never cross my threshold again.

I will never buy Barcardi again. I'm tempted to write and tell them why -- except they wouldn't care, just shrug me off as a bitter "ugly girlfriend."

Assholes.

i was confused by the post's title.

are hateful outlooks the primary export of Israel or something?

Sorry -- that has nothing to do with sexual orientation and everything to do with how certain segments of our society value a particular perception of attractiveness.

Fit those categories and you get to be the Ugly Girlfriend.

Wow - a double set of issues I think I can comment on!

1st, you'll never go wrong choosing PYRAT over Bacardi...

2nd, my ex-wife was NEVER bitter, despite the pressure of having to come out as a Catholic Mexican Lesbian...

Once again, Bacardi deserves the place it has in my liquor cabinet: the exemplar of "You can do a LOT better than this!" when I give my "History of Rum" classes!

And that's aside from the real survivors who got to be raped by rightwing religious nutjobs in an effort to make them straight.

That's aside from the experiences getting thrown in jail for wearing the wrong underwear.

Except a lot of it ain't history, it's right now.

That's aside from the generalized societal misogyny which means that perfectly ordinary women get treated badly when they try to get their cars serviced, or get their houses repaired, or get electrical problems traced.

Hell, you want bitter--after the Bush Administration and the recent shooting of one of the very few late-trimester abortion doctors in th country, has he talked to *any* women lately??

I'd be tempted to say to Young Mister Privileged White Guy, hey, babycakes, learn some of your own frickin' history.

But folks during racefail did all that talking about white male privilege (even if you're gay, as an invisible minority) a lot more than I could.

But honestly, an appealing and funnny and accessible set of explanations for him would be the cartoon "Dykes to Watch Out For".

I find the most depressing part of the Bacardi campaign that of the 103 people who friended it on FB, I saw so many female faces.

I.... just. um. Those ads are so... explicit. Rubbing thighs? freckles? they are absolutely clear on what traits are unattractive. I'm just... stunned. I don't find any of those women unattractive (though in the case of the first and somewhat the third, unflattering poses, but not much else). It makes me cry. It's just.... I wonder about these models who did this. They had to know. How does that make them feel? How upsetting.

Hmmm...

Update: both sites have been taken down by the agency/Bacardi.

Interesting. I hope nobody forgets this bullshit. Screw Bacardi. *shakes head, pissed*
