kyburg: (Mommy me)

Last night, cuddling up over Special Agent Oso (I HAVE to track down the production office for this show, NTS), kid and I were having the kind of chats one has trying to get kid to settle down to watch television quietly, because You're Going To Bed Soon.

Jim was already gone, snoring on the couch. I'd taken over from him when kid started plainting for Mommy - which is okay. One of us has kid, one of us is on the couch next to - that's the routine. You have to watch out when you lay on Mommy, though - my overalls have pokey buttons, but a pillow takes care of that. Dad is a bit more padded and wears t-shirts. If he plaints for Daddy, we trade off. Simple enough.

Then I get this.

"I like Daddy." "I do too, sweetheart."

"I like Mommy." *snuggle* "I love you a whole bunch"

"I love Mommy." First time. "I love you too - it took us a long time to find you."

"I have a Daddy, and you're Mommy..." "Forever and ever, sweetheart."

Somehow, we got onto toys. Big ones, little ones. And when we first met him, all the toys were little ones, until we got home and we did nothing but open new toys up for hours - everything here that was waiting just for him. He remembered that.

"But what was I?" This took a moment to process because the words weren't clear - but here's the moment of clarity again - dear ghad don't let me fuck this up - he's asking me who he is and where he came from - "You were in Taiwan, and it's a long way away...and it took us a long time to find you!"

That was acceptable. We still got a lot of explaining to do, but that was a good start.

He's being really tough on Jim right now - I'm really not sure why, but it often takes me getting in the middle of things to keep things in motion. With Jim, everything is a game. Well, he is the biggest toy in the room - but.

It's the little things. Would you believe the kid ate pizza yesterday? And liked it!

That is wonderful :)

I will shamelessly admit that I got weepy the first time BoyZilla told me that he loves me. It totally never gets old.

*smiles* That is so totally win. It runs along the lines of my favorite adoption quote: "I loved you forever, before I ever found you. You've always been a part of me, and now I'll keep you forever."

Kids are like sharks and cats, they scent "weakness" like blood and home in on it. They always know who the softie is, or at least who's more willing to tolerate their shenanigans

That sounds like a perfect kid friendly explanation. Kudos to you!

You can dole other details out as Xander gets old enough to understand them, but right now simple and direct sounds perfect.

I think that explanation will last for a few years. I'm so glad you got a wonderful kid.

That's absolutely wonderful. I really like your answer to "Where was I?". Not only perfect, it was true. :)
