The sentence is fairly pitiful and Polanski would be treated as a celebrity prisoner. And then deported. It's not as though they're protecting him from the death penalty.

I know right. When Paris Hilton was released for overcrowing and the judge said, "Nuh, uh. Not til your sentence is done." people applauded. Judge wants to send Polanski back and people act like it's such a miscarriage.

Sources I cannot name would indicate that the US fucked up on the legal end and didn't get the Swiss the paperwork they needed. So don't blame them.
