Dear Yahoo.

I know converting my Geocities stuff over to Yahoo was only a temporary measure, a stopgap at best - to prevent me from losing things I really didn't remember I had anymore. Seriously. I knew there were things on those two sites I didn't want to lose, even if I didn't remember them at the time you were getting ready to purge the servers.

But you gave me enough warning to make those conversions in time.

Unfortunately, a year later? When it was time to pay again? Why, I called. I advised you to take care of both accounts. You told me you had.

You missed one. And when it went delinquent? You couldn't email me anymore. And while there was a phone number on the account? Why, it's a company policy NOT to use it!

So the account closed, you purged the data and didn't tell me. Not once. Now? Now you can't recover it.

Not the fan fiction site. MY WEDDING SITE. Thanks a lot.

This is me, changing the registrars on the domains I bought. This is me, getting ready to move the remaining site off your servers. This is me, trying to recover what I can from archive.org and remaking the site elsewhere.

Because you just can't be bothered. Well, guess what. I won't bother you anymore.

Not with anything.

I've had great luck with Dot 5 Hosting (dot5hosting.com). They're inexpensive, give you plenty of storage, do domain registration, and provide lots of option. The few occasions I've needed customer service, they've been very helpful. Just tossing it in the mix.

I've been using Westhost for years to host cahighways.org, although I still have the actual domain ownership at eNom. I'll also note that I've always done my site by having a local copy that I upload; this means that my backups at home cover the site.

Add yourself to the notify list here. Maybe they've got it somewhere.

"...against company policy to use the phone number." G-d how I hate self-serving policies like that! During the relatively short time I was doing policies and procedures writing at Memorex, I discovered that the Asset Management folx had decided that, rather than sending the customer a notice that their lease would be expiring shortly (which had been policy for years, and I'd bet was still in the initial contract being used), they'd simply let the lease run and convert it automatically to a purchase - which would mean the customer was potentially stuck with outdated equipment and no option for upgrade/trade-in. That sounded like legal exposure to me (and this was years before I'd even met the ex), so I ran it by the Contracts folx, who confirmed it and forced Asset Management to reinstate the notifications. I am so sorry this happened, and I hope there'll be some way, somehow, to recover the lost - data or material doesn't seem right - memories.

That sucks.

The way I manage websites is to keep the whole thing on my machine at home, and push it up to the server when I change anything. A program called rsync makes this easy for sites on reputable servers.

I recommend dreamhost.com

he.net has been my host for the past 11 years and they have been consistently great.

Absolutely awful. You had a very cute wedding site.

Any chance that any of it is Google-cached anywhere?
