Thou really ART mortal, neh?
She was scheduled to appear at this year's LA Times Festival of Books, too. But it would appear that congestive heart failure got her at the age of 79 - and she had been at Cedars for six weeks leading up to her passing. She had a whole suite of rooms there, named for her and everything - if you hear that some celebrity is hospitalized in a 'local Los Angeles hospital' for whatever ailment, it's Cedars. And they're in Liz's Suite.
And they knew her well, unfortunately - her poor health was no act. I spent a lot of time at Cedars in the years Cliff was a patient there, a foundation hospital very tied to celebrity support.
From my perspective, I can glean a few things directly: one, she may have had issues with you, married and divorced you, argued with you, saw you in court often enough to be on a first name basis, even on a renamed (and not fit to say in mixed company) basis...but she forgave readily. And was as often forgiven, herself.
Twitter allowed one a chance to get a glimpse at just how much her children and grandchildren adored her, if you looked quick enough. Every time a report showed up on the news when she was hospitalized, you got a glimpse of her children - and over the years, you saw them often enough to wish them all well and learned to respect the base desire to have some measure of privacy. Because you certainly knew the why of that request, holy chrome.
Whatever else she was, when you were hers to love - she did. I don't begrudge her passing - it was not swift or without warning - but I can certainly feel sorry for the family she left behind. They are really going to miss her so. Celebrity was what she did, but to them that was not what she was, and what she was to them can't be said for fear of second-guessing something very private indeed.
They who knew her, adored her and it would appear it was reciprocal.
I am so sorry, you guys.
Liz? Go kick Michael in the ass and give Freddie our regards. We'll see you later.
