kyburgYesterday, he was the media darling of the day. Today, he's just another statistic.
I'm talking about Nicholas Michael Farber.
And after his abduction was ruled a non-custodial parental kidnapping, his story is just about gone from any newswire service.
He wasn't snatached by a molester, was he? Just dear old Mom and her friends.
He's one of 350,000 abductions done yearly, according to the report cited on the About.com Site on Incest/Abuse Support. It's a pretty comprehensive article, BTW - and hits the points I'm trying to remind Jim of when I talk to him about the subject.
We're landing almost squarely in opposite courts, which is frightening. In my court, my belief is that you have to be pushed beyond reason to do this. This abduction looks too well planned, executed and well, they're gone...someone got pushed beyond what they could deal with, negotiate in court and felt this was the only way to preserve any kind of relationship with their child.
Jim feels that the mother is likely to be a real criminal and everyone involved in this is a Bad Guy.
I strongly suspect we're both right - but what I want to see is that "bitter custody" dispute brought out into the open.

Also, what I want, is a neutral third place for children caught in these battles to be while the courts hash things out - also, a permanent understanding that both parents have rights...biological rights...to their child. Past the age of 18, that the kid's purview. But until then, you can't take a child away from a parent without their knowledge...or the reverse.
We've got a good reason to be concerned - Jim's parents subjected him to a nasty divorce when he was only a little older, and he watched his older brother have his two children taken away in court by a real winner of an ex...who then has subsequently lost all parental rights, a bit at a time, as the children began to fail...both scholastically, emotionally and physically. The brother now has complete custody, but the damage is incredible and there will always be scars.
If she tried to do this...
Frankly, I doubt seriously that the broad has the brain cells, but you can see where Jim would come down on one side of the fence.
I just wonder if he would be so firm about it if it was his own mother kidnapping him when his change of custody at 15 hadn't been approved.
The man submitted a damming document in Orange County, no doubt. But the proof...I want the proof.
