Because I got hit by a delivery van while riding one of my scooters, and it practically destroyed my left leg :( Just had another surgery on my leg last Oct. That's why I stress helmets. I would be dead if I wasnt wearing mine.
I want another scooter, but I panic whenever I get on one.
How well does your body take to vehicle impacts? Do you HAVE to go any place that would mean being out in the weather? Do you NOT carry anything with you but a backpack?
I'm in California. And this baby tops out at 30 MPH. That means it goes little faster than a bicycle. And I would ride it much the same way, on the same kinds of streets.
I can put a wallet in a jacket pocket and be done. Oh hellya.
No air conditioning? No radio? WHY GOD WHY?! 86 the scooter! Plus you must take into account, rain and snow. Ick. And wrecks on vehicles like that are scary and a million more likely to be fatal. Bad plan. Say it with me, "Veto the scooter!!" :o)
I voted for the scooter, with costs in mind. As someone who's worked at a car dealership, get the scooter. Man, the beater autos might look like a good option now, but repairs are just right around the corner, and constantly. Even if you can call a cab or pay bus fare or whatever on days when the weather is poor, chances are very good you're still paying less than multiple car repairs. And insurance will be much cheaper, too. :)
I voted for the scooter as well, with the following caveats:
Your commute is short (i.e., around 5 miles one way, at worst)
There's an operational vehicle that you guys already have (I saw a mention of a station wagon?), because toting groceries on a scooter is a pain. It also helps during those six or seven days when SoCal gets weather that isn't Nice And Pleasant (like this past weekend)
Take the motorcycle safety class (if you haven't taken one already). If you took one some time ago (more than 2 years), take it again, because it never hurts to brush up on those mad l33t skillz in a nice, controlled environment
NOTE: Getting insurance that covers anything you hit isn't to difficult. Getting insurance that covers "you" when you get hit or hit anything could be a bit more difficult. Check with your current insurance provider FIRST before you get the scooter so that you know the facts. My folks used to ride their motorcycles to and from work in the 70's (125cc Yamaha and a Trail 90cc Honda both enduros) and we used to trail ride on the weekends. I have a lot of very fond memories there as well as some rare bonding moments with my dad. Thanks for the post it brought me happy memories.

Date: 2003-03-18 03:13 pm (UTC)There also remains the option of buying a car after we close escrow on the new house - just getting into payments right now wouldn't be wise.
