Interestingly enough, the platypus is one of only two mammals that is truly poisonous, the other being a specie of shrew. The male platypus has these spurs on its rear feet that are connected to a venom gland. I know of a documented case in Australia where this one man was invenomated by a platypus he accidently grabbed at while fishing. The animal thrust its rear legs backward in self-defense and stabbed the spurs into his hand. Fortunately, his son was there, but they were like 70 miles away from the nearest hospital.

Apparently, the pain and edema from the platypus venom was so intense, that when he did get to the hospital, even morphine could not dull the sensation. It's quite an interesting fact, if you're into that kind of stuff.
