Not like Saturday nights.

Yardwork complete - to a degree. I am going to begin targeting areas for weeding. Today's were the two planters in front - and while I'm not entirely happy with my level of gardening skill (too many things are not growing well enough to suit me), it is now neat, tidy and cared for.

The brick walkways in the backyard have gotten the edging of their lives - and my backside is complaining for it. The tool is small - but it's what we've got, and it does work. You just have to take breaks while you catch your breath between sessions. It takes hours to get the backyard done. Then you have to water everything. Add four more hours.

The dog has decided to jump into the planter in the backyard and rummage around. If that's where the possum has decided to hide, power to her. When I yank everything out and replant in the spring, she's going to get a nasty surprise when the roses go in.

She also got out this morning while I was working in the front yard. Ran straight for Torrance Blvd (five lanes, 55 mph or better) - no, I am not going to feel the least bit sorry for her if she gets confronted with a rosebush in the spring. She turned around and headed back for home only when some kids wanted to catch her - she spent time in the dog crate until I finished up. I am mean.

I am looking for packing boxes for shoes I bought in July. I am also LAME.

Got a good lesson in why I don't care much for American comic books this evening - though I have to give kudos to the new Teen Titans - thanks for the Yellow Submarine ripoff. That was clearly played to the strengths American comics have - their sense of fun. The next hour was X-Men Evolution and it was another overwrought angst feast due to doubletalk and strange contraptions. Okay. Big O was up after that.

*Sighes. Stretches.*

I kept hearing Robert Vaughn voicing Robert Smith. I can't help it. Comparing and contrasting this hour with the one previous - the good guys and the bad guys wear normal clothes. They share meals much as you and I would. The houses look familiar. The motivations are much the same as the ones I see daily - with the twist Big O carries as it's hook. 40 years ago, everyone forgot everything. Tada. Yes, there are strange technologies - but they are clearly defined and the normal guy on the street has the same healthy respect for a 40-storey mech that you and I would.

This is believeable. I don't have to shut parts of my disbelief off to get through the plotlines. There are theater conventions I have to adjust, but they are part of the hook - not something I have to accept over objection to read the book/watch the cartoon.

I do love anime. There are reasons.

Someone once asked me if I liked harem anime. (Harem what?) Oh. Is that what they call it? Keep in mind I grew up watching stuff like Scooby Doo and Josie & the Pussycats. That's what there was. Star Trek Classic. I.E., no wimmen.

Well, okay - a smart one and a dumb but cute one. Repeat for next cartoon show. Blech.

No wonder all my role models were men.

Tenchi has a new OVA coming out - which at once scares you, disgusts you and intrigues you. Tenchi wore it out years ago - hmm, two television shows ago, at least. But the first OVA remains one of my all-time favorites. It's gorgeous, the score is unique and enjoyable, the technology is tweakey - and it has women. Very different female characters. Tenchi is a cipher next to them, in both appearance and development - he won't be interesting for ten years, easy. This caught my attention at once - and I'd have to say, every time an ensemble cast comes along in an anime with a higher female count, it's easy to say "oh no, not again" - but I do check out the characters. Utena is another one of these - Dual was another (natch). Love Hina is a gimme. So I guess if harem anime exists, I like it - but I doubt it's for any reason the creators intended.

And it's nice to see the guys on the receiving end for a change.

Folks should be getting home from AWA soon. Hope it was all you bargained for.

Tomorrow, I continue doing recovery and cope with a broken translator. Joy.
