The puzzling meaning and origin of the radiation sign

One of the most recognizable warning symbols around is far less ominous than an image of a skull and crossbones, but it’s nowhere near as easy to understand.

If you know what the ionizing radiation warning sign means at all, it may only be through pop culture references.

Despite being used worldwide to indicate radioactive danger, it has been internationally misinterpreted as signifying anything from propellers, to warnings of electricity, AIDS, toxins or even road hazards.

The sign reads like any other yellow sign that denotes “caution” rather than “run as fast as you can!”.

So in hopes of minimizing civilian radiation accidents, the International Atomic Energy Agency developed a new sign in 2007 that would supplement the existing black and yellow sign, with a design that is undoubtedly more alarming.

But as it stands, the propeller blades will still be the official warning symbol for radioactive material.

It’s been debated whether the original sign was ever even intended for public use in the first place,

In 1946, a time when scientists were only beginning to understand the risks and effects of radioactive substances on the human body, one of the engineers at UC Berkeley’s Radiation Lab, Cyrill Orly, was asked to design a symbol that would communicate the presence of ionizing radiation in the laboratory.

Here is the first sign he ever made.

Recalling the small cloud chambers that burst forth from the radioactive particles he had assembled earlier, Orly thought that those images would be a good representation of “activity radiating from an atom.”

Initially, he chose the magenta-like roman violet for the symbol because it was a very distinctive color that didn’t conflict with other, already familiar color-coded systems. Since the ink for this precise color was also very expensive, it was thought that they price tag might deter people from using it on other designs in the future.

He also chose sky blue as the background color because blue wasn’t very common in areas where radioactive work was conducted.

Later on, other labs started using yellow as the background color when people recognized that blue doesn’t denote “warning” very well and tended to fade outdoors.

And by the late 50s, the yellow and magenta version was federally codified and became the official, internationally-recognized radiation warning symbol.

Since then, black has also become a federally permitted substitute for the color magenta, and has actually become the most widely used.

Hopefully, now that the meaning of the propeller blades is much clearer to you, you’ll take heed of those invisible rays.

I remember seeing this with “Fallout Shelter” under it around town, growing up.  Asking my mother what it was, she always said “I don’t know” and changed the subject.

Mom had a terrible game face.  She knew.  She just never told.

Hi there! I would love to! I think I’ll start out with an example with filter words and then cut out the filter words to show you the difference.

For those of you who haven’t seen my post on Filter Words.

Now, for the example:

I felt a hand tap my shoulder as I realized I had made a huge mistake. I knew the consequences would be unsettling, but I had no other choice. I saw the light of my desk lamp bounce off of the officer’s badge before I had even turned around. It seemed like I always found my way into trouble.

It was the first thing off the top of my head, so it’s a bit rough sounding….

Now for without filter words (And a bit of revision):

A hand tapped my shoulder as it dawned on me: I had just made a huge mistake. The consequences would be unsettling if I didn’t get out of this mess, but I had no other choice. The light of my desk lamp bounced off of the officer’s badge. I always found my way into trouble.

By taking out filter words, you get right to the point.

I’d also like to add a few more notes that I didn’t have the chance to post previously.

Some Examples of Filtering:

I heard a noise in the hallway.

She felt embarrassed when she tripped.

I saw a light bouncing through the trees.

I tasted the sour tang of raspberries bursting on my tongue.

He smelled his teammate’s BO wafting through the locker room.

She remembered dancing at his wedding.

I think people should be kinder to one another.

How can you apply this?

Read your work to see how many of these filtering words you might be leaning on. Microsoft Word has a great Find and Highlight feature that I love to use when I’m editing. See how you can get rid of these filtering words and take your sentences to the next level by making stronger word choices. Take the above examples, and see how they can be reworked.

FILTERING EXAMPLE: I heard a noise in the hallway.

DESCRIBE THE SOUND: Heels tapped a staccato rhythm in the hallway.

FILTERING EXAMPLE: She felt embarrassed after she tripped.

DESCRIBE WHAT THE FEELING LOOKS LIKE: Her cheeks flushed and her shoulders hunched after she tripped.

FILTERING EXAMPLE: I saw a light bouncing through the trees.

DESCRIBE THE SIGHT: A light bounced through the trees.

FILTERING EXAMPLE: I tasted the sour tang of raspberries bursting on my tongue.

DESCRIBE THE TASTE: The sour tang of raspberries burst on my tongue.

FILTERING EXAMPLE: He smelled his teammate’s BO wafting through the locker room.

DESCRIBE THE SMELL: His teammate’s BO wafted through the locker room.

FILTERING EXAMPLE: She remembered dancing at his wedding.

DESCRIBE THE MEMORY: She had danced at his wedding.

FILTERING EXAMPLE: I think people should be kinder to one another.

DESCRIBE THE THOUGHT: People should be kinder to one another.

See what a difference it makes when you get rid of the filter? It’s simply not necessary to use them. By ditching them, you avoid “telling,” your voice is more active, and your pacing is helped along.

The above list is not comprehensive as there are many examples of filtering words. The idea is to be aware of the concept so that you can recognize instances of it happening in your work. Be aware of where you want to place the energy and power in your sentences. Let your observations flow through your characters with immediacy.

Ok, sorry for the lengthy answer, I know you just wanted an example…. sorry!

The Sound of Culture: Diaspora and Black Technopoetics (2015)

“The Sound of Culture explores the histories of race and technology in a world made by slavery, colonialism, and industrialization. Beginning in the late nineteenth century and moving through to the twenty-first, the book argues for the dependent nature of those histories. Looking at American, British, and Caribbean literature, it distills a diverse range of subject matter: minstrelsy, Victorian science fiction, cybertheory, and artificial intelligence.

All of these facets, according to Louis Chude-Sokei, are part of a history in which music has been central to the equation that links blacks and machines. As Chude-Sokei shows, science fiction itself has roots in racial anxieties and he traces those anxieties across two centuries and a range of writers and thinkers—from Samuel Butler, Herman Melville, and Edgar Rice Burroughs to Sigmund Freud, William Gibson, and Donna Haraway, to Norbert Weiner, Sylvia Wynter, and Samuel R. Delany.”

NPR’s Eyder Peralta reports:

NASA has developed a special camera that lets you actually see the details of a fiery plume emanating from a space rocket. In the past, cameras have a hard time adjusting their exposure to something so intense, so all you often see is an overexposed jet of fire.

Scientists tested the new HiDyRS-X camera, which can record multiple exposures at the same time, during a recent test of the the Space Launch System’s boosters and the results are mesmerizing.

There is a term, I guess.  When a recruiter calls and wants to know if you’re interested in an opening that sounds and appears to be just like that gig you walked away from - the misogynist, ageist number that mommy-tracked you when you became a parent.  And would likely have terminated you had you not left first.

And now, they’re willing to pay three times as much.  Because they haven’t kept anyone in the job for more than a year since you left.

Leaving was awful.  But it looks I stuck it out longer than anyone else.

I wish them luck and hope they find what they want.
