So I get this off my EDI ML -

Edifecs now has a free standalone tool for creating and editing EDI data,
the Data Editor also allows one to search and replace data and
terminators/delimiters. The Data Editor can be downloaded from our website
by going to http://www.edifecs.com/solutions_downloads.jsp and selecting
"Data Editor Standalone (With De-Identification)".

Edifecs new release of SpecBuilder 5.2 Enterprise and HIPAA edition also
ships with the Data Editor.

Search and replace data and terminators/delimiters? Pay HOW much to do that?

Bah.

Special characters, you add backslashes.

FREE.

Comes with every copy of the Unix operating system. vi is your friend.

Even if it does bend your brain backwards.

I'm cheap and plan to stay that way. What a maroon.

I got laid off from a job where I was doing a ton of EDI work on an OpenVMS mainframe with COBOL code ported from a PRIME back in the dim and misty.

I'm a Windows developer.

You can imagine just how thrilled I was to be doing EDI work. Not to mention HIPPAA compliance stuff...

You have my sympathies.

*blinks*

HIPPAA.
COBOL.
EDI.

Dude, if you ever need a job, don't leave those things off your resume. You'll never go hungry.

You won't want to live, but that's another story.

Oh, I know. I'm doing .NET now, but with my COBOL experience (as minimal as it was), along with my (rudimentary) understanding of EDI and my (stark raving terror) knowledge of HIPPAA, I could probably get a job somewhere if I lost the one I have (which I certainly hope doesn't happen).

I just don't know if it would be much fun. :) I still have a 3-inch think printed X.12 hardbound book somewhere, and I think I've even got the EDIFecs docs too.

I feel your pain. :)
