Last night, I caught some of the memorial service on Animal Planet for Steve Erwin - awwwwww. It was also a moment of absolute surreal for both Jim and I - because we were there ourselves last fall, we could even pick out the seats we sat in at times. (It was behind the cameras for the most part.
I think history is going to remember Bindi eulogizing her father - not only for being dead-on cute and glurge-worthy, but also for having an incredible amount of poise for someone less than 13 years old. Say what you like about what was said and why - to be that centered in the midst of what must be chaos right now is noteworthy in and of itself. Dayim.
I was reminded of the memorial service they put together for the folks in New York after 9/11. And of course, of the memorial thang we put together for Cliff, back now eight years ago. Yup - the 17th, it was 8 years. Going out to the dentist yesterday, I took flowers over and checked up on his rock under the pine tree in Sierra Madre and made sure he was okay and looking good. And then rushed back to work.
Somewhere, I'm sure I still have programs left over from that service we did. We played frisbee and ate the spiciest food any of us could manage. It was just like he was there - except he'd just gone up the trail ahead of us.
I'm still looking for homes for some of the things he left behind -
It's time for AWA again - and again, not going. Bah. We keep thinking about it, and the year turns and we never have time off spare or funds or both. This year, it's the time off we're hoarding like church mice against the time we'll need to take off to complete the adoption next year.
And as I've often said, since Cliff passed - it was a day pulled out of the hat, which I am forever grateful for. But when Cliff left, he took the summer with him - I expect cooler temperatures, shorter days and so forth. Fall is here.
