kyburg: (don't wanna)

Something I see over and over again.

You can't teach if you can't get your audience.

You can't get your audience if you don't make your argument that you should have one.

You can't make your argument if you Lose It Completely while identifying that you need to teach. Something. To an audience.

....

People keep wanting me to get in a lather. I guess it would indicate to them that I had listened, understood the material and was reacting appropriately...and seem very let down when I don't grab a torch and pitchfork and head for the streets.

Pick the topic - there are plenty of them. Shoot, go use the calendar function on this journal for this month in 2003 and there are PLENTY of convincing reasons to get into a lather.

(Haven't changed my mind a whit since then, mind.)

You don't need my support to be right. No, really. Unless I make a point of correction (and you know what those look like), I'm not failing to support your point of view if I don't stumble into the fray and fight on. I don't see the need. And quite frankly? I'm looking for a better opening. I wanna WIN.

This is me being stubborn. Not mean. Not angry. Stubborn. And still able to listen. I may actually find out something I didn't know before - if I listen.

If you're sure you're right - don't stop to look around and see who agrees with you before deciding for certain. Ask - if you must. But if you have the power of your own conviction - and are willing to take the lumps if you're wrong, and with this method you really CAN be - go for it.

If I can't do it alone - I then have to make my argument, don't I? Because I then have to get my audience, to make my point and teach what someone has shown me to be the case. Getting angry, huffy or insulting? Wow. Not gonna work. At all.

And if you walk away and not talk to me at all? Don't expect me to follow you, begging for your audience to make my point. You don't want it, and I'm not going to chase after you to force it on you.

Angry people get kept on short leashes here, remember. I can certainly understand why you might be - but I expect you to cool off, center and then make your point. Anything that can be shouted can be whispered - and still be valid.

Bring it down a notch. People tend to work harder to hear a lowered voice than be willing to endure a screaming match.

Getting angry about stuff people just don't know jack about blows me away. Clearly, this is all POV work - but come on. Challenge the "who are THEY" assumptions, and the "some people said" arguments. THEY who? SOME where? WHO? WHAT.

Make your argument. Support your stand. Challenge those assumptions. Question authority.

Keep your shirt on, head on your shoulders please. You need to come back here and discuss the merits of Peeps at half-price and other issues of the day, right?

Here - just for free. If you're reducing people to one-word labels - YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG.

And you ain't gonna win.
