[livejournal.com profile] actionjbone wants to do an music video contest for Worldcon.

[livejournal.com profile] silverkun, would you like to tell him your experience with this worthy organization? No, really. Maybe Tony would like to second you on it.

I don't _need_ anyone to convince me... I know four people on the committee organizing the convention, including one who is a house manager that's gone down in WorldCon history. ^^;

Hon, make sure your ass is watertight and can run independently of any con staff, their assistance or their lack thereof -

As I said, any con this large that doesn't have "something" as popular as a music video contest - there's a reason.

Chat up the folks who worked last year's WorldCon in San Jose. I strongly advise it before making up your mind.

um

In case I hadn't mentioned, the people in charge of the entire con's technical staff are close personal friends.

I yanked staples form the floor and plastered the walls of the convention Sound Designer's new house. Hells, I crashed at his house for a week before I found my apartment. ^_^

Are they asking you to do this?

I feel that this is a biased question. ^_^

*whistles and looks innocent*

The first Worldcon I was involved with, Harlan Ellison refused to come inside the facility because Arizona voted against the ERA - that was 1978. (Checks profile - winces. Arg. That was before you were born. Double arg.)

I've had many years experience dealing with Worldcon - none of it encouraging. If you are willing to work hard for no perks whatsoever - Worldcon staffers (at least at this last year's con in San Jose) paid the full rate to work the convention. No break on hotel rooms, no crash space - zip-po - in addition to dealing with more drama and angst per square inch than anything I've ever heard of on the anime circuit (and that includes the mighty org forums, BTW - that should say something).

I'm in the position to warn you to CYA. Nothing more. If you want to do this, make sure you're prepared. You may have the time of your life - or an experience you'll wish you could forget and never will.

If you want to do this, power to you.

Politics-wise, I couldn't care less what goes on at the convention. I plan and expect to be self-sufficient and self-supporting, else I wouldn't even be bothering to try.

Live-support-wise, I know the people with whom I'll have to interact well enough that I won't have to worry about dealing with them. I dealt with them for years at my theater, and we each know and understand how the other works.

Financial-support-wise, if the con won't provide any, I've already decided to just say "screw." They're paying for a P.O. Box for submissions, for necessary raw materials, and for anything reasonable and necessary that I'll need, or I won't run the contest.
