Somewhere on a trading card, I have the following special talent = "Making The Best Of It."

Since I've been handed the last swallow of milk in the carton 9 times out of 10, you acquire this skill or you end up the biggest l00zr on the planet.

You can't make a silk purse out of sow's ear - but you can certainly make something you can carry your money in. Won't look as good, but who cares - right?

It'll have style, instead. Uniqueness. Individuality.

And that's something money never buys.

You wonder how I can keep driving the POS I have - well, that's one way. Every month it keeps running, I get to keep nearly $400 in car payments and insurance.

Designer labels do nothing for me, and never did. Whoo-hoo. Whatever.

I'll always buy the Volkswagon over the Porche, the Chevy over the Cadillac.

I'm first. The rest is just swindling.

Personally I don't see the attraction to name brands either. One of my friends put it quite well when they said "I like trendy things, but I don't like name brands, if it's cute and it didn't cost you a hundred dollars, all the better", and then there's my brother's (and my) personal motto "I refuse to be a walking advertisement!" *chuckle* Though all it really boils down to for me, are three things. Function: Does it work, and how well? Finance: How bad a hit is my pocketbook going to take over it? And Comfort: If it doesn't fit right then why buy it in the first place? Admittedly, I won't buy some things on basis of looks, but that's just because I don't want to make an ass out of myself, I have to this day managed to avoid most major name brands, and all the expensive ones. Hell, the only things in my closet with a name on them anymore are my bloody jeans, and there just isn't a way to find anything that's not a name brand around here for those. Oh well. At least I'm not walking around hawking Tommy Hilfiger or some crap like that. Give me a T-shirt and jeans any day of the week, and I'm happy.

And don't forget the artistic liberty! I felt completely at home gluing action figures all over the hood of my truck. It was a junker, but it got me where I needed to go, and in a joyful manner. So there.

It would appear...

...that we have more in common than our first name. I did buy a new car recently, but only because mine quit about 3 years ago, and, since the separation, the car I'd been driving (which was still in the ex's name anyway) was a honkin' big gas hog that didn't fit well in my apartment's assigned parking space. And I went for a Toyota, during the year-end clearance - at least I have a fair chance of seeing the car outlast the monthly payments.

No kidding. My wife's car has been paid off for a few years and there is only 1 year left on the truck. After that, the truck payment gets applied to paying off other debt. And doing all that 60K maintenance and other repairs myself saves lots on that and the extended warranty I don't have to pay for.

Noddity... ooooh yeah. Every piece of furniture I convert into something else is something I don't have to blow more money on... and plywood, though not fashionable, *is* easy to work with. :)
