I'm hearing C.W. McCall's dulcet tones coming from my living room. WTF.

A commercial for an SUV.

What?

(Do we need to take a collection to send to the advertising agencies to go hire them some musicians to write some original music for their spots?!)

Fuckaduck. I mean it.

Oh, and be nice. "Convoy" had a sequel and I'm not afraid to post it.

Yep. A lot of the songs I remember fondly from my childhood/adolescence have been ruined by car commercials. And some just don't make any sense at all. "Won't Get Fooled Again" for a car commercial? And if I don't hear "It's a Beautiful Morning" again it'll be too soon.

(I did have a funny reaction to the commercial where the girl calls her boyfriend a geek for listening to the tail end of "American Pie" while she waited for him in the parking lot. "She doesn't like 'American Pie'?" I gasped. "Not only is she hideously thin, she is obviously a spawn of Satan.")

Yup. And too dumb to live.

Where, oh where are the great old Coca-Cola ads with their own music?

Lazyasses. Grrr.

I'll see you and raise you one.

C.W. McCall was really Chip Davis, the man behind Mannheim Steamroller.

Actually...C.W.McCall was Bill Fries and Chip Davis - Bill doing the voice, and Chip doing the music with his studio band that went on to become Manheim Steamroller - but don't get me started. Behind that link are references to albums I actually had - and a friend of mine has ripped to mp3 from vinyl. Oh, the shame.

I do know what you mean. When I hear Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin in commercials, I am like WTF? I am sure Jimi would be rolling in his grave!

This makes me even more glad that we don't have cable, because hearing CW McCall in a commercial might send my wife over the edge. His albums were the soundtrack of her youth, and on our family trips she plays a compilation tape she liberated from her dad.

I seem to recall the mid-70s being rife with TV ads featuring either CW McCall or CW McCall imitators. It's annoying (mainly because it's such an obvious ploy at appealing to Gen-Xers), but IMO nowhere near as bad as The Clash being used for advertising. Because using The Clash for advertising is the worst thing ever.
