The Great Book of Amber: The Complete Chronicles of Amber will explain everything. By Roger Zelazny, these are consider a "reference" science-fiction/fantasy series on the order of the Darkover books or the Lord of the Rings.

Going to Worldcon this weekend? There will be plenty of folks who will happy to clue you in.

They are wonderful books, but that goes without saying. I got my favorite character too, which doesn't hurt. *grin*
