Surf's up!
Nov. 29th, 2004 02:16 pmProof positive that anyone with an axe to grind, will grind it to the exclusion of rational thought:
Fight CPS!
Some quotes - besides "they took our kids for no reason!" - which is ubiquitous:
Ohio: Caseworker accused of prejudice against Muslims
Massachusetts: Father on trial for murder of CPS caseworker
Georgia: If the state can't take care of kids right why not leave them with their parents?
*blows air*
Prayer requests? How about the top of the list?

Okay.
Well, they told us to get ready to deal with this - in two different sets of classes.
Imagine me being asked to adopt that oldest at 15.
Boy, I know kids get taken by mistake. But those kids go home, as fast as the system can turn it around - but it does take time. Lessee - my whole process has been most of this year, hasn't it?
Not as simple as good vs. bad. That, I'm certain of.
Gods. You go to a site for folks looking for support after their kids have been taken by CPS, and the majority of posts is about foster homes where kids have been killed, molested and worse - thanks a bunch. Those poor folks.
Just keep grinding that axe.

Date: 2004-11-29 03:02 pm (UTC)This couple couldn't have children, and decided to adopt. But rather than select a baby, they wanted to give a child who had a hard time in life a chance for happiness and security. They ended up adopting a young girl, I believe she was about 8. The girl had a younger sister, but for reasons never explained to me, they only took the older girl.
These girls were up for adoption because they saw their father murder their mother. And then the father left the house and the girls were left to fend on their own for days. The girl this family adopted was around 5 when this happened, and took care of and protected her younger sister.
The girl who was adopted had severe emotional issues. We were friends, to a degree (she was several years younger than I am), and I could tell she wasn't "normal" - but I never understood why she acted so much more immature than her age until I was older and my mom explained to me what happened.
Kelly (that's the girl's name) became very bitter as a teenager and made her adoptive parents' life a living hell. I often wondered if they regretted their decision to adopt her and to give her the loving home she deserved. Therapy apparently didn't help her much at all.
The story is so tragic. Nobody was happy, not in the end. I wonder, often, if things would have been different if the family had adopted both kids. I also wonder how they are today.
Whew. That was a dump, and I'm sorry if it made you uncomfortable to read. But your courage in the face of what you want to do makes me think of Kelly and her family - and makes me admire you all the more.

And teenagers can make anyone's life a living hell - for a while.
*chuckles* I know I can out stubborn anything living. I've done it.

PS links aren't working so well on my dial-up tonight :P

Date: 2004-11-30 07:09 am (UTC)Found out the other day that once placement is done with us, we'll have to meet CE requirements as well - that's about 12 hours of classwork per year to keep out foster parent home license.
Something tells me situations like the one you know of have prompted some changes -
