You can’t understand politics in Montana without understanding how racism against Natives operates, fueling right-wing ire at Native people’s control over land and resources and presumptions that we’re corrupt, lazy, and hoarding money from hard-working whites who want to have the land for their own version of highest and best use, Gianforte ran on a racist campaign for that reason but only other Natives are talking about this aspect of the election and I am fucking sick to death of having to force the issue and get Americans to even think we constitute a political part of life worth more than evoking a crappy metaphor about immigrant nativism or the environment.
In his race for governor in 2014 Gianforte said that Native Americans lacked “rule of law, respect for property rights, control of nepotism, ability to keep the fruits of their labor, and a cultural norm that celebrates success.” You really can’t get more blatantly racist than that.
