Yard Day

Remember I said I need to find some kind of exercise to do regularly - that I could stand?

I don't know that I'll have enough yard days to fill the bill, but it's certainly something I can stand.

The delivery from yesterday's shopping arrived right at 10:00 AM this morning - six rose bushes, three flowering shrubs, a plum tree, grass seed (with spreader), two bags of compost, two bags of potting soil, and we still have one more tree on order -

But, we got everything but the bulbs planted today. Jim's going to put the grass seed in after mowing lawns Monday.

(I got about two dozen bulbs to put in a pot to sit by the mailbox and look pretty. The bulbs are currently going 'ahhhh' in a bucket of water - I'll put them in their potting soil tomorrow.)

I've got a reasonable track record with roses - Mom being a good source as she used to grow them when we were littles. Two red, one yellow, one white, one old pink - and the one mentioned in this icon - the Disneyland rose, which can be everything from copper to yellow - should be interesting.

We managed to salvage one of the Chinese Elm seedlings, I think - and it will have a new neighbor as soon it comes in from Monrovia nursery - a Himalayan Champaca. Fragrant, slow growing and evergreen. Think Asian magnolia.

Tired now. Napping. Sore, too. All the locations had to be prepped this morning before anything could get planted. Weeding the heck out of half the beds this morning in the front yard - a task that will likely get finished later this week as well. Supposed to rain like heck Tuesday - which for new plantings, will be good!

Got good and filthy too. Stripped two feet inside the back door and left the clothes there. I'll go start a load of laundry before I leave the house - *laughs.* I let Jim go first in the shower while I made lunch. He's either a good sport or oblivious - when I went in to get my shower after lunch, I discovered I had mud all over my face from scratching my nose or something. Doity. Used up all the hot water getting clean again, mind you.

Going out to dinner tonight - but first, I nap!

Sunday afternoon nap. The best kind.

Funny, I grew up in Monrovia and I don't know where the Monrovia Nursery is, unless you're talking about Armstrongs, but I can't remember if that was always it's name.

Sounds like a fun project and something to do that will show a result. That's always nice. If you don't end up getting enough days, at least you'll have pretty flowers to show for it. :D

It's still in business, but I don't think they're in Monrovia anymore - they moved (and sold the farm) some years ago. They were right up against the foothills, near Bradbury....

I really enjoyed reading about your garden. Yup, gardeners get soft around the middle during winter but there's nothing like the rest of the seasons to work it off! :-)

i love gardening... unfortunately life in boston doesn't afford me much dirt-space. yours sounds lovely ^_^ (ah how i miss getting up in the morning, wandering outside, pulling a rose off the bush and munching it while i watered.) anyway, i just wanted to say "hi", since you said to. good luck with everything.
