For decades, we in the media have reported that women earn less than men. As a result, we've created a generation of angry women and self-conscious men.

A new book, "Why Men Earn More," by Dr. Warren Farrell, shows we've been dead wrong: For the same work, women earn more than men. His findings are based on a comprehensive review of government and other statistics.

Farrell is no right-wing misogynist. He ran for the Democratic nomination for California governor. He's the only man ever elected three times to the board of the National Organization for Women in New York City. And he's no intellectual lightweight; the Financial Times named him one of the world's top 100 thought leaders.

The book's main message is good news for women: If women do one or more of the 25 things men more often do, women can earn more than men.

Farrell does not encourage nor discourage women from doing these 25 things: "Each of the 25 usually requires trading quality of life for money. I just want women and men to be aware of their options so they can craft a life rather than just accept what drops in their lap."

My mom did have the choice, and she told 'em to stick it anyway. They told her to go home because she was hurting her husband's career; a diplomat needs a wifey at home to throw parties. Mom threw the damn parties and did her own job, and retired with a higher GS rank than Dad - and could've had higher, but they weren't going to be overseas posts any more, so she declined what would probably have meant Senior Service rank.

All that after they flunked her on her first State Department oral exam purely for having tits.

Let's take this one at a time:
Choose careers that pay more. Who the fuck *chooses* a career these days? We take what we can get, bubs. Longer hours - bullshit, executives work more hours than assistants! The assistant often doesn't *get* to go home until the *boss* leaves - but the boss can slope in at nine-thirty or work from home, while the assistant's gotta be there at eight sharp to answer the phones no matter she was up til midnight collating his presentations.

Harder to obtain sk,ills - funny, those are the skills we've been bitching for for years, whose fields are so goddamned prejudiced that we can't even get the right education.

"unpleasant, but necessary, work that few women will do" - janitorial, anyone? Low-end medical care and nursing? I'd be a roofer any day rather than have to wipe up other people's poop, especially since it pays more and works less hours. But the unions and the construction companies don't like to hire women, and the ones that do get hired get razzed to hell and back. Chicks only broke into highway repair and construction within the last five years that I've seen, maybe ten years if I'm kind - and I live in dyke-friendly California.

just hving glanced at it, and deciding that it is not worth my time to finish reading, i would like to point out that i know many people who are perfectly happy sitting down and coding for an hour, but absolutely freeze if you ask them to write a two-page paper or read for an hour.

sciences harder than the liberal arts? depends on who you are.

oh, wait. women tend to go into the liberal arts. gosh, i guess they must be easier than the sciences, then.

Just wanted to comment: I want to raise kids and be a homemaker while my wife is the primary breadwinner. Many would think that sounds lazy. But it's just where my priorities lie. Family matters much more to me than any career could. But I have a feeling I will have a hard time finding a woman who would agree with this arrangement. I hope that I can, though.

Oh, I don't think you need to look much further for support than this household.

Our roles are definitely 'flipped' from what the CW would expect - I make more, I'm definitely more aggressive and I'm just about the final word about everything. (It's the horns and the tail.)

Jim's definitely who you go to when you need something soothing - the dog prefers him, the cats know he's a soft touch and the neighborhood kids come over to see him. Yes - they come over to see Jim. It's amazing.

If one of us has to stop working to look after kids, it'll be Jim - no question. He's just better at it.

Go take up a profession that interacts with children - volunteer or something. If you're any good at it, it'll make you very attractive, trust me.
