He always struck me as being genial and kind - that storybook monarch you always read about in fairy tales. If anyone has a story about him being mean for any reason, I'd like to hear it. I never knew of any.
Saul Bellow, who rose from writing book reviews for $10 apiece to become one of America's greatest novelists after World War II, passed away on Tuesday at age 89.
I remember reading his stuff in high school; listening to him speak on NPR -
