Mom was discharged shortly after work's end yesterday. Discharge that late in the day? She was waiting to see her doctor - then they let her go. That's the only reason she was there - and that's a good thing.

George Takei has come out. Well, it's nice to see William Shatner isn't the only Trek actor to finally gain some maturity instead of just getting older -

This was known in my circles for years and years. Like he was also an internee during WWII in Arkansas - you just didn't talk about it around him. But - as he has come out about that, and been VERY active with the Japanese-American Museum in Little Tokyo as a first-hand experience to query - I'm glad to see this is finally out as well. We knew. We didn't tell.

People who have hang-ups about this, don't know anyone with this sexual orientation - really. Any reservations I ever had about it evaporated once some first-hand knowledge came along. That's my POV - and it was done when I was 11. I'll be 45 soon. Count on your fingers.

Payday. HAHAHA. Gotta go.

LOL I just read that and realized how multiple it made me sound. :) For others reading this, "Our" refers to [livejournal.com profile] kyburg and myself... We have the same birthday, just she's the younger of us. :P

*watches his paycheck go down the rent drain*

What's your opinion on Nemoy? He's got serious kudos at my house because of how much money he's thrown at the Griffith Observatory. Granted, I don't much track what folks do outside of their TV series (mainly because I don't particularly care if it doesn't directly impact me/mine. I've ranted about Albert Brooks in my journal before, scumbag unfunny (self-edited for content), but if they otherwise don't affect me...)

Nimoy? The classic Aries - dynamic and all over the place. Don't try to pigeonhole him - the moment he's noted someone trying (the whole Spock thing really wore him out at times), he'll do whatever he can to get out of the slot you've put him in.

He was writing during the classic Trek production years; he sings, he's a reasonable dancer, from what I hear and the fact he turned out one of the best directors for the Trek movies doesn't surprise me in the least. Go check out the stuff he did with John Delancie for Alien Worlds Productions - it's incredible stuff.

He's been philanthropic since the get-go - if you want to find pictures of his son, Adam, you need only look in some of the local rags and you'll find him at fundraiser after event after fundraiser. (He looks just like his father, except he has chipmunk cheeks. Darling.) It's a family thing, it appears.

Nimoy is intensely private, doesn't like being bugged and who can blame him? But I can't help but picture him standing around, looking over his shoulder at Shatner and saying "C'mon, Bill. Hurry up."

They're three days apart in age (Nimoy is younger) - but from all reports, they are still very good friends - Shatner often says "It's just so nice to have him, yanno?"

I did know about the WWII internment - but I think that wasn't discussed by society as a whole for a long time.

The sexual orientation I didn't know. Or care. As long as he's happy, it's a non issue.

Regarding George Takei, it's nice to see he's come to a point where that's a step he's comfortable taking, but I must admit I'm a little dismayed at the implication that being in the closet is somehow immature.

I've known various gay friends, both in and out of the closet to varying degrees. While I do find it frustrating and unfortunate that we live in a world where people often have reasons to be afraid of admitting who they are, personally I refuse to find fault with anyone for not coming out if they do not feel ready to do so. This is a profoundly personal thing, with serious implications for one's life and one's world, even nowadays. To be honest I'm quite aware that I have no idea exactly what making that decision is like for most people and I never will, and I know it can be dramatically different for each person.

Some people argue that gay people have a responsibility to be public about it, to raise awareness and help others who are struggling, and on the surface that seems to be a valid point, but when it comes down to it, at the core of things this isn't a political issue. Nobody should ever feel they have an obligation to air their own very personal matters for the world to see, just because it might help somebody somewhere someday. Nobody should feel that just because they are some particular way, their private feelings and thoughts are not their own to do with as they choose. Some people are willing to stand naked before the world and withstand its onslaughts for a chosen cause, and they are remarkable people, worthy of acknowledgement and often praise. Some people are not ready, and that does not make them any less important, or less mature, or less of a good person.

It is each person's business to choose their time, and each person's reasons are their own.

At least, that's my view on the matter...

Being able to accept yourself, without concern about public opinion or possible fallout? Willing to accept that level of risk?

Dude, that's huge.

I'm stocking up on purple. For when I get old, of course.

1 - yay that Mom's gone home. And from what it sounds like, she's better than she was.

2 - Ok, so Mr. Sulu's gay. So? He's still a good guy. As for Nimoy and Shatner, I think Nimoy never took himself all that seriously, and Shatner's gotten to the stage where he doesn't either (especially if all of the roles and tv commercials he's taken of late are any indication)

3 - Anything planned for birthday/anniversary?

4 - phoo. I get paid every OTHER Friday, and today ain't it.

5 - but it IS nearly the weekend! =)

6 - cookies still there, but dwindling.

C.

How about that. Congratulations to both your mother and George, then.

I'm glad your mother is better.

I'm not shocked or stunned about George. I am wondering what my homophobic Trekkie family will do/say/burn.
