One more time -
Jan. 23rd, 2006 02:36 pmYou fail to address the reasons a woman seeks to end a pregnancy, you fail to address the issue of abortion. Period.
You fail to see a way clear for a woman to complete a pregnancy, safe and well-cared for - you fail to address the issue of abortion. Period.
You fail to see a way to provide legitimate tools for a woman and her partners to prevent an unplanned pregnancy, you fail to address the issue of abortion. Period.
Roe v. Wade is not a blank check to terminate any inconvenient pregnancy, or a free ride for those who would. Roe v. Wade is privacy law. Period.
And in this culture, I'd be more concerned about the privacy issues than the "welfare mom" issues - or the innocence of babes issues.
Do yourself a favor today.
Find a "St. Anne's House" that will take a pregnant woman under the age of 21.
Find a source to safely terminate a pregnancy that you'd trust not to kill you. Oh, and find funding too.
I've tried to do that today, and failed. That's what public opinion has done - and I consider that a very legitimate outcome, considering the vehemence of the arguments put forth.
Anything more is side-stepping the realities entirely.
Noble, my ass. Pro-life, my ass.

Date: 2006-01-23 10:56 pm (UTC)Frustrates me on so many levels, and knowing what the current government is doing to the laws here too...
one piece of good news:
Date: 2006-01-23 11:05 pm (UTC)The U.S. Supreme Court unanimously recognized its precedent that abortion laws must protect women's health and safety in Ayotte v. Planned Parenthood of Northern New England, et al, last week.
"This decision tells politicians that they cannot jeopardize women's health when they pass abortion laws," said Jennifer Dalven, Deputy Director of the ACLU's Reproductive Freedom Project, and the attorney who argued Ayotte before the Court.
The case began as a challenge to a New Hampshire law that prevents doctors from performing an abortion for a teenager under the age of 18 until 48 hours after a parent has been notified. Contrary to 30 years of Supreme Court precedent, the law contained no medical emergency exception to protect a pregnant teenager's health.
The Court asked the lower court to consider whether the New Hampshire legislature would have wanted this law with a medical emergency exception. If not, the Court said the law should be struck down in its entirety.

Date: 2006-01-24 12:28 am (UTC)It's that kind of privacy - does the government have the right to step into your personal business to make a decision about it?
They decided they didn't. That's all.

Date: 2006-01-24 04:46 am (UTC)Word!!
Date: 2006-01-24 06:37 am (UTC)They think they already own it.
The trampling of privacy in the wiretapping and datamining that the Bush Administration is already doing, totally failing to run it by a court that'd do anything they asked, says that much.
The Neocons just want the cake decoration on top, some judges saying yes, boys, it's all okay, *whatever* they choose to do.
Thanks for the post *and the comments, kyburg, I'd like to cross-link, if that's ok?

Date: 2006-01-24 03:14 pm (UTC)I worked for a company that made electronic monitoring systems for LDRP rooms; that gave me access to both ACOG and AWHONN trade shows and their memberships. (That's a lot of alphabet soup. Hang on. LDRP=Labor, Delivery, Recovery and Post-partum rooms...ACOG? American College of Obsterics and Gynocologists...AHWON? Association of Women's Health, Obsteric, and Neonatal Nurses.)
I attended their meetings the year the whole "partial-birth abortion" issue came up.
I asked everyone I could pull aside about it.
I couldn't find a single person who had ever heard of it. That's been consistent even picking up literature on it from the pews of catholic churches. I couldn't find the people who supposedly had been doing this procedure. ("Hi, I'm Kathy Smith, a RN who used to work in an abortion mill that did partial birth abortions and this is my story....") The closest thing I could find was one doctor who "hmmed," rocked back on his heels for a moment and pronounced that he'd consider the procedure..."but only if the baby was dead and the mother was dying."
Then we moved into our current offices at work, and my direct line used to be to a women's health clinic that performed abortions. I've been listening to the people who call to schedule procedures for four years. Most of them? Not the person getting the abortion. A lot of them are male. A lot of them hit right after holidays, like clockwork. Failed relationships usually mean more than a broken heart.
Do I ever try to talk anyone out of it? Too late. Waaay too late. I don't have more than one bedroom spare, anyway.
I wish them luck. That's the least I can do. It's pretty clear they have none at this point, neh?
Re: Word!!
Date: 2006-01-24 09:37 pm (UTC)I knew people kept saying partial-birth was a *very* rare procedure, but nobody said it was so rare that none of the ob-gyn folks even know how to do it.
And the male folks calling to schedule procedures right after the holidays?
That's so weird and sad and amazing. We all *know* holidays are stressful for a lot of people, but that's ridiculous.
Thanks for telling us all this, too.
