In two days, we have two stories about two guys who thought it was a grand ol' time to shoot up some schools, kill some kids...and then off themselves.

UH.

OH. Female kids, in the bargain.

And then I get to see Ann Coulter mouth off about how "we're not getting attacked in America because of the blah blah Iraq" bullshit.

HELLO, WE'RE DYING HERE.

Yanno? I really don't like the part where these guys offed their targets because they were planning to off themselves anyway?

I mean. Really. There are worse things than getting killed. In this case? Staying alive would have been just fine as a punishment.

If I'd had the power, McVey would have lived a nearly immortal life - the length of each of his victim's natural lifespans - in prison, with the sounds of their cries in his ears.

Every.

Single.

Day.

..

No. I am NOT in favor of capital punishment.

That said? I say it again - guns + st00pid = ded. (And those of us NOT teh st00pid? Don't know it.)

it seems it's becoming the new form of rape. hideous. there is so much pain in this world, I'm going to try and focus for at least the rest of today on bringing good in.

Speaking as a diagnosed homocidal sociopath, McVey wouldn't/doesn't have any guilt about the people he killed. All that would happen is that he's locked up for all of eternity with a roof, bed, cable tv, library, medical care, food, gym and all of it without guilt or remorse.

To give you a better idea, I give to you this little gem. Enjoy.

And some people are dead certain they're animals and do nothing to dissuade anyone from the fact.

Me? I just don't give them what they want.

He gets to do whatever society decides he gets to do - and that can change in the blink of an eye. All the chuffing is just that - he can say what he likes. Talk is damn cheap. (WHAT, you want him to be sorry? PULEEZE.)

You think he was prey at some point? Or at least - he was treated like bait on a hook for someone. Count on it.

People live what they learn; yeah, I'd wager on some pain for that guy. Past, present...and definitely future. We'll just never hear about it.

That's my idea of justice. You know he will eventually be paroled.

I believe in 2 forms of justice for certain crimes. One is death. The other is the rest of your life locked in a cage without entertainment, AC, and other luxuries a lot of working class people can't afford.

I must say...here I disagree with you. I for one am all for capital punishment. What I don't like it how it is done. Just lay down and get pricked with a needle and go to sleep....GIVE ME A FUCKING BREAK HERE! personally I think that all these rapists and child molesters should be given to the family of thier victim! I know if one of my kids was ever molested when they were a child and they locked me in a room with the person responsible.....I would make the beg to be sent to hell to be tortured for all enternity....it would hurt a lot less than what I would do to them.

Nah. Anything you could do? Would be over too fast. I'm serious.

There's lots worse things than dying. I could come up with a number of things worse than dying.

Name one. Plenty of these 'people' do not feel remorse and have not been capable of it for sometime. They wouldn't mind if you papered their cell with photos of the victims. Lots of them had that at home. Plenty of murdering bastards keep scrapbooks of their crimes.

You can come up with things that would be worse to you than dying. I'm not sure somebody as civilized as you could come up with something that would be worse to THEM than dying.

My mom and I were just talking about the shootings. It makes me angry how not only do these guys come in and end the lives of others, they end their own in a petty attempt to get out of dealing with their sins. I too am strongly opposed to capital punishment.

The thought that came up on our phone conversation was that maybe this is the effect of lack of health care, or lack of jobs. I don't know. Do you think these are factors?

We imprison more of our population than any other westernized nation.

We spend more on health care...and receive less of it.

He was employed.

You got me.

Here's my first thought

I understand that the guy had an arsenal on him, but of all the adults in the school, none attempted to help the girls get out? None tried to even reason with the guy? WTF?

I think the running for help saved lives...I'm sure we'll hear more about it as time goes on. I can't imagine - and I won't second-guess. Wasn't there.

Sigh..

These people are so horrible! They let their emotions carry them away and inflicted pointless violence and trauma on other people!

We should let our emotions carry us away and inflict horrible violence and trauma on the bad guys! Yeah, that's so much better!

Am I the only one that sees the problem here? It seems like everybody I hear talk about this sort of thing is so horrified that people do these sorts of acts to those around them, but are perfectly willing to do exactly the same sort of horrible things to them in response (or, in many cases, advocate punishments that they perceive as being much worse, such as torture instead of "just" death).

The logic, frankly, escapes me. What exactly makes us better than these people, again?

We let little crack fantasies remain little crack fantasies?

I dunno.. this sort of rationalization seems to me to be a big part of the reason why most of the US populace doesn't care that we're illegally imprisoning (and doing other things) people in Guantanamo, etc.

And that whole mess seems like a pretty big crack fantasy to me...

I think it's at the exact point when people *think* they're entitled to act out their rages on others. I think that's when.

We'd rather see guns and violence than sex. You tell me.

If he's taking revenge for "something that happened 20 years ago", why did he kill preteen girls?

Like [livejournal.com profile] ginmar, I kind of wonder if this stands a chance of being addressed as a hate crime, as the killer clearly chose his victims by gender.

Sigh.
