Got the blood test results back - three months or so from the last set, and after loosing 20/25 lbs.

Doctor is ecstatic. This is news in and of itself -

Total - 170
HDl - 40
LDL - 110
Tri - 97

I don't quite recall the original set back in June, but I do know the total was above 220 - and he was considering medication. This last test was my last chance to duck it.

Looking it up on this handy dandy website, I come away quite chuffed indeed.

Low
Low
Eh, but low (even doctor says this is a bit extreme to say it's elevated in any way) (Oh wait - "If you don't have coronary heart disease or diabetes and have one or no risk factors, your LDL goal is less than 160 mg/dL." Okay, chuffed here.)
Low

Since this is THE reason I decided to go talk to Weight Watchers - you can bet I'm insufferable right about now.

I'd interpret these as 170 = very good; 40 = unacceptable and requires treatment; 110 = unacceptable; 97 = very good

probably, you need to be on slow release niacin pills to raise your HCL and finish the job on you LDLs; the latest research urges vigorous response to these parameters.

*nods* Considering my diet right now is nearly vegetarian and just about fat-free (that happens on WW) - that's probably true.

Slow-release niacin, huh? I know the side-effect if you OD that stuff - do I need to be confused about whether it's a hot flash or not (*chortles)?

But it *really* does appear to be weight-related, at least with the family history. I think all my sibs are on medication at this point - and guess what - all my sibs are 30+ lbs overweight. I'll probably compare notes with younger brother and see where he sits (or sat) before they put him on Melvacor.

I think we'll retake this again in another 90 days and see how it goes -

A bloke I know was put on a ton of niacin after he had a heart attack (caused by a birth defect he didn't know he had). I don't think it was the long-release stuff. He spent the next few weeks barely able to sleep nights because of hot flash-like symptoms and terrible itchies, and was a miserable and cranky person. He told the docs this, also pointing out that since stress and lack of sleep has caused the heart attack, this seemed Bad. But they just told him something unhelpful like "take it with dinner". Since his cholesterol levels were fine and the heart defect cleanly repaired by a stent, he quit taking it. IIRC niacin had also been discredited vs. heart attack prevention, although maybe not vs. cholerterol, so check on that stuff before doing anything drastic.

That's great!!

Mine runs at around 200 but the HDL is high and the LDL is low, so my doctor is happy.

You rock! *high fives you* :-)

BTW, the ratios between LDL/HDL are what's important, not just the raw numbers. Good info here: Cholesterol and understanding its numbers

Go you! That's awesome - and I know it wasn't easy keeping to a diet with the amount of hard work you do. Yeeha!

Reward yourself somehow; you've earned it.

Nah. This was easy compared to everything else happening right now. I really am a creature of routine, and doing a WW plan just feeds into that.

Well, I'm glad it worked, and I'm still proud of you. (I'm a creature of routine, but that routine is one of TV dinners. Breaking the bad ones is the hard part usually.)

Wow, congratulations! And thanks for that link - through it I just ordered a publication from the American Heart Association on "healthy snacking". :)
