I'm getting used to hearing about stupid things parents do to buy the perfect gift for their kids at Christmas - but we're in the middle of January now, aren't we?

*ahem* Do I have to say it?

No -insert THING here- is worth your life. No, I mean it. No amount of money, no promises of gifts or bonuses, no fame or fortune...no show, no stunt, no nothing. Is worth your life.

Case in point.

Contestants in a radio stunt called "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" revealed new details Sunday about an on-air water drinking contest that left a 28-year-old mother of three dead.

Jennifer Lea Strange died after drinking well over a half gallon of water Friday during the "Morning Rave" program on The End (KDND, 107.9 FM). About 18 contestants vied for a Nintendo Wii gaming console by drinking as much water as they could without going to the bathroom; Strange took second place.

I'll be blunt. I saw 28 years old and Ranco Cordova and went, "yeah, they're dumb enough down there to do it."

Yeah, enough water will kill you. Funny that. Also, should you have extreme head pain of any kind? If it's enough to bring you to tears, has never happened before (maybe, even then) - you need to be seen. Immediately.

And that's when I found out she was survived by three children.

Bad, worse and dead.

I am so sorry for the people who are going to have to clean up this mess - and the kids will be trying to figure this one out the rest of their lives.

When I read this all I could think was... what the hell are her kids going to think? They're going to deal with all that guilt for the rest of their lives. And what the FUCK was that radio station thinking? Damn. Also, what do you say? "My mom died in a radio contest accident?" The stupid shall be visited even unto the seventh generation.

You can eat out on a story like "My mom died in a radio station contest."

They might as well, that's all they'll get from it.

Story also says the DJs ebuffed a nurse who called in to warn about water intoxication.
Nice going, assholes.

The stupid burns. Her family will prolly sue on the grounds she didn't know this kind of stunt was bad for you and win a gazillion bucks to get therapy for all the kids, that is to say a big haouse and a fancy car.

That is such a sad story. I had NEVER heard of water intoxication before.

I love entering contests and could picture myself entering a contest as silly as this one.

My heart goes out to the poor children left behind!!!!!

A co-worker sent me this link because he was one of those console chasers over the winter (Managed to score 2 Ps3's and 2 Wii's for his efforts).

All I could do is shake my head. I suddenly wondered if I was the only one who knew about the too much water can kill you thing. I also despise water. It's my desert roots, I swear.

There's at least one person who tries to start a ruckus about hyponatremia on the ePlaya every year. (TTBOMK, there's never been a case reported at the event, though that doesn't mean people shouldn't be aware of it.)

I missed the second page of the Bee article. It was worse than I thought. These assholes are the same sort of assholes that bully teenage girls into being videoed with their shirts off.

Dead for $250. is sad enough when it's a story about a robbery. Entering an endurance contest for a damn console when the stupid Justin Timbershmuck concert tickets might've paid for it...gods help us.
