So. Jim got sent home from work today with conjunctivitis He's off until Thursday.

Since this stuff tends to be very very contagious, y'all have just been warned.

I'm fine. He may not like being given a list of honey-doos for the next two days - and I'm not entirely convinced he doesn't have to be followed by his own eye doctor - but at least it's not another bacterial-caused ulcer.

I'm annoyed. Jim is itchy.

Your trivia report for the day.

I'm doing my best to ignore all the the airtime a dumbass with a gun is getting - at the expense of incredible people like this man, who should be getting ALL the attention. You understand.

So much WORD in so little space. HOW DO YOU DO IT?

I had an excellent journalism professor, my first year in college. I remember spending whole classes just writing leads...what was it? A murder? The opening of a new movie theater?

"That's very good, but you used more than 25 words. Do it again, and only use 11...or less. And make sure you've told me everything I really need to know. Supporting information can come in the second paragraph."

We also had dictionaries...and Robert's Rules of English. No computers, we learned how to mark up copy using symbology that had been around since linotype was invented. Pica sticks. Oh, those were the days....

She was fantastic for us...and we were her world. That's...almost thirty years ago now, no doubt she's gone to her reward by now as well.

But I was taught well - thank you so much, today of all days, for noticing.

Thanks for posting about that wonderful man... a Survivor who risked himself to save his students...

I can't talk too much, because every time there is a story about a shooting I think about how I'd feel if either of my parents (both who were once teachers) were killed and then I just get all ape-shit.

If there is a hell... I hope that fucker is burning there now getting shot by demons all day long.

He died too soon. He had a lot to answer for. Past that, he was only a random force of nature - and just as unpredictable and uncontrollable. And as random.

I'm never quite sure what to say over things like this. Whether I'm more relieved to know there are people like him still around in the world today, or that they still have to make that sacrifice. Regardless of all else in his life, which I don't know and can't begin to imagine understanding, for the simple sake of his willingness to sacrifice himself for his students, the world lost a good person yesterday.

However, I doubt that his memory will fade with those students he saved.

You know, I don't think he was afraid of anything - if that's any comfort. He was just frankly, amazing. The good ones always are. A lot of folks are really going to miss him. Soooo much.

And did he have to be killed for us to find that out? That's just sad, in and of itself, isn't it?

He was a hero last week, so help me. Anyone who survived as long as he did, with all the strikes he had against him, and still remained the mensch he obviously was, had to be.

This was just one more thing, totally in character, for him to do. We WILL miss him.
