Because everywhere smells like burning.

The car is now covered in fluffy gray ash as well as the brown from yesterday. NASA TV is showing satellite pictures of the west coast instead of archival films.

I've called the DART team here at the South Bay ASPCA - so far, they haven't activated.

Last night at sundown, the sky was blue overhead - and orange fifteen degrees down from straight up, to the horizon.

This morning, the winds are back up and the skies are crystal clear again.

Here's the Google Map of the Day - wow, cutsie widdle flames. *facesmacks*

Note most of the fires are in pass areas. Anytime you see a freeway with no connections to either side, and no cities to either side? Only reason is because they can't build because there are big friggin' MOUNTAINS on either side. Trust me.

I really have to feel for the folks in Santa Clarita - not two weeks ago, they had to close the one freeway that fed that area (the 5) when the one tunnel was blocked by FLAMING DEATH a semi-truck pileup that killed a number of people. They are NOT the lucky ones, no matter what they'd like to tell you.

Go open that map. I'll tell you where I am.

See the cities of Santa Monica and Inglewood on the map? Where that last "D" in Inglewood is? Move your pin below it. That's work. Right on the ocean, yup.

Now - trace the 405 down to it. It intersects a freeway drawn straight down, north to south, just above the word "Long Beach." (That's the 110, BTW.) That's home. Finding Jim's work is harder, because it is not near any identifying marks...think just a bit south of Whittier and a tad west.

We are verily surrounded. But not in any danger.

I am also vastly amused that Hemet is visible, but Manhattan Beach is not.

Yesterday they advised people with breathing issues or immune issues to stay inside. Even though there is no fire here, I'm afraid to leave the house.

I'm snuffling like I have a cold - it's all allergies, thank God mine are no more incapacitating than that. But this is with the Alavert onboard, mind.

I'm going to be adding a ionizer inside tonight, with the windows closed. I fear my dusting this weekend.

Those little flame icons almost look like fire imps on my computer.

I'm glad you're not in danger of burning up.

Not this time - but we're surrounded, and it's impossible to ignore that other people are square in the line of fire. Literally.

Ahhhh fire season. Every time I breathe it feels like I'm gonna die. YAAAAY ASTHMA!

I'm surprised that with so many fires there has been so little death. Not in a bad way of course, it's probably one of the few "good" things to come out of this. Poor firemen, and poor people in the way of the fire. That Malibu one's starting to get pretty close...

Thank god some of the fires have been contained (at least according to the map you linked to.)

It was a tad freaky last night. I was in Eagle Rock, and thus surrounded by hills. But we could still see the orange towards the earth, the blue in the sky. After rehearsal, T and I went to the top of Lake Ave, in Altadena, and the horizon was strangely dark, except in one area. But I imagine if the fires don't wane by Thursday, I'll be driving through them on the way to rehearsal. Or at least I'll get a very good close view of the Santa Clarita fires.

Where? All I'm getting is Mission Control.

Well, with a shuttle mission underway, I suspect the focus has shifted a bit. ^^

Eyikles. I have plenty of friends down that way, we used to live in San Diego before September 11. We moved back to GA after that by April. I loved it there. The house we wanted to build in Ramona would have burned down twice by now. Please keep everyonbe in your thoughts or prayerrs or whatever you prefer to do for this kind of thing.
