Advent - Day 11
Dec. 11th, 2008 06:41 amHow to make a gift with something you have around the house. (Version 4.0)
Look for what's in season near you.
Then search out recipes. We've made pomegranate jelly since I can remember...every year...as gifts. Why? Someone had six trees in the backyard and it made sense to use them up as they came on this time of year. Gorgeous color -
I can tell you more ways to juice a pomegranate...not many of them all that efficient. (Believe it or not, an orange juicer attachment for a stand mixer? Don't. Just. Don't.)
But a sweet potato pie would be nice. A bag of winter squashes with a short stack of recipes? Shell some walnuts, roast and spice them - put those in a jar!
There's always someone with a persimmon tree around here. Cookies, butter, bread -
See you tomorrow!

Date: 2008-12-11 03:57 pm (UTC)Oh, PLEASE do tell! I'm using the 'smash them in a tea-towel' method, which works (so far) to keep up with my little tree, but not for much longer! Next season will require more efficient methods!

Date: 2008-12-11 05:02 pm (UTC)The only other thing I would recommend, if you wanted something faster? Make sure it's enclosed. Like, one of those Juicemasters - which is what I used the last time, but cutting the fruit down into a size that could be juiced was easily as messy as any other method. *Goes looking for an example* Oh holy chrome, the one I have is over ten years old now! *smacks face* Let's just say the project was absolute carnage - I took pictures, but haven't posted them. That stuff stains like nothing else - and it stains everything it touches. Walls...ceilings...cabinet doors....
