Company changed their vacation policy. Yes, while I was on vacation.

Guess. No, really. You can do this one without me.

I swear, if peanut butter and jelly tortillas could fix it -

But, yeah. No good deed goes unpunished and all that.

Last time, folks. VERY last time.

I did indeed. Not getting reimbursed for all the time off and that jazz.

If you had legally accrued the vacation time, I don't believe they can take it away without giving you cash reimbursement. You may need to contact a labor lawyer.

That's just it. It hadn't 'accrued' yet - I had been given the entire sum of hours to disperse through the entire year.

Just - when I actually began taking it, they changed the rules. So halfway through the year, I don't have that entire lump sum to play with.

Question 9 is why they changed the policy. 9_9

OK, I think the answer to Question 9 is a bit confusing, but IANAL. I think they owe you $$$. *hugs*

You may or may not want to "stir the shit" on this but it sounds like if their policy was that you could take the vacation and you started taking it, at the very least they were obligated to notify you of the change in policy, and possibly they are obligated to pay you the entire amount because you "took" - or looking at it from another angle the company already APPROVED - the vacation under the existing policy. After you exercised the option to take an advance on your salary (which is apparently what is equivalent to under CA law) under existing company policy I don't think they could change their minds mid-vacation (again, at the very least it seems certain they would be required to notice you immediately).

You might contact the DLSE and ask about this specific situation (without identifying yourself or your company if you prefer) as I'm sure you're not the first to have this happen.

Granted I work for the feds so I'm used to there being lots of protections for benefits, but...

...but if you had this vacation duly approved under the old policy, ESPECIALLY if it was in the same pay cycle as the notice of the policy change, they really truly ought not to be able to penalize you. I know that if I, as a supervisor, approved advance paid leave, it would be considered binding unless there were pretty extreme extenuating circumstances. Sometimes saying, "I might ask for this to be investigated" can be just as effective as actually filing the complaint.

Sounds like a company cutting everything they think they can to stop bleeding cash...doesn't sound good. A change in policy such as vacation policy has to have some notice, and one week would be considered unreasonable.
