I just nudged a buttload of people. Yo, my bad. Hey, I miss you guys.

RANT MODE=ON

A standout season has done plenty to calm the controversy surrounding quarterback Michael Vick. But President Obama's praise of the Philadelphia Eagles for giving the convicted dogfighter a second chance has brought new energy to an old firestorm.

You know, if you say anything about Michael Vick, you are asking for a major flaming. Seriously. There is very little middle ground when discussing all the circumstances surrounding him.

Well, flame on, says I. Go right ahead. Have a weenie roast while you're at it.

Outside of making a case against yourself, projecting your issues onto the wider stage and basically using a public figure to make your personal arguments, this isn't doing a single dog any good, making Vick another dollar or bringing a football team any more publicity that it could do all on its own.

There are a lot of people who think Vick should be killed for what he did.

That's not an option.

That he shouldn't be making a dime off his chosen profession. (Tonya Harding, anyone?)

People want to get paid, folks. Also, off the table.

He's never going to get another chance to do it again, guys. Let alone want to, need to or be any party to a single dogfight ever again. You remember that warning about your life only serving to be a warning to others? Yeah. That.

I doubt I'd walk across the street to tell him this, though. Nope, don't want to.

The dogs that survived the experience - which normally, would have been put down 'as a matter of policy' if they had been in Los Angeles? Jim Gorant wrote a book on them. 49 out of 51 are homed, often within families. Amazing. (But not altogether so if you know anything about the breed. Pibbles are incredible.)

We are giving the dogs more opportunity for rehabilitation than we are the people involved. Don't you think that's a little uneven? At least?

You want to castigate Vick, go right ahead. While you're at it, call out the people who run puppy mills for profit, okay? (My personal peeve.)

Find some money for the local shelter. All the ones near me - and all the rescues - are so impacted it's beyond reason.

It's easy to vilify Vick. So easy. It's harder to do something useful, going forward. Why, that would be WORK, for crying out loud.

So have your entertainment at the expense of a public figure who is clearly identified, tried and convicted (but served his time - more than I would have expected, but that's a story for another day) for things that are a matter of public record, and are not discussed around children. That awful.

Go for it.

When you're done? Do something useful with the time you have left over. Thanks.

The only really bad thing I ever had to say about Michael Vick... was that he was not a very good football player. *wry*

As for this thing... heck, he served his time in prison. It was a FIRST offense, for another thing.

And as for the dogs... I'm glad they have been given a second chance.

One of my co-workers has a rottweiler and she is big and sweet... although she sorta doesn't knot her own strength. *wry* And according to my co-worker, she's a big slobber machine.

And, anyway, wasn't it Jesus who said "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone"? Yeah... that.

Regarding local shelters...

Killed? Nope.

Not allowed to own a dog? I'm down with that.

And hell, everybody *wants* to make a living. But, as Mr. Jagger so aptly puts it "You can't always get what you want."

Frankly, I shed no tears when Ms. Harding was banned from skating. Assault a colleague? Yer so outta there.

Yanno, I could draw the link between illegal dogfighting and very legal and VERY lucrative professional football...but I won't.

Unfortunately, that's where the comparison to Harding falls apart. Assaulting colleagues is considered the reason one is getting paid, if you're in professional football. Just saying.

I would gently point out that the comparison works, just that the rules in play are different.

Sack the opposing team's QB? That's just how it's done. Take a crowbar to their kneecaps? Not so much.

Also? Don't get me started on puppymills.

You are so bound and determined to have a purebred (when a lowly mutt will love you just as much), at least get your snooty dog through a breed-specific rescue.

And I'm gettin' off my soapbox and going home tonight to hug my lowly rescue mutts.

We donate to the ASPCA every year, and started long before the whole Vicks debacle. And yeah, would never get a purebred animal when there are so many wonderful mutts (both canine and feline) who need a home out there.

Be careful with donations to the ASPCA - if you're not specific, all of them go to the unit in New York, and nowhere else. That warning, courtesy of the unit in Los Angeles that can't afford the awesome campaign the NYC unit is running everywhere right now.

You know...I don't really have any commentary on the topic beyond to say that I agree entirely, but I /did/ want to point out that...man, I have so much respect for you.

What you have to say, even if I don't always agree with it (not that I can think of anything off hand) is...good. I don't have a better word for it than that. Thank you for speaking up, and speaking your mind, and for being you.

You're awesome, lady. Knowing that people like you exist gives me hope.

Sounds like you hit every nail on the head and homed it in one shot.

It seems that whenever animals are involved, especially animals we consider to be pets, normally sane and rational people completely lose their shit and turn into shrieking, limb-rending chimpanzees on a murder-spree or some other insanity.

There's nothing wrong with being the guy who drags them back to the chair kicking and screaming, tells them to SIT THE EFF DOWN, SHUT UP and THINK for a moment.

Nothing at all, sez I.

As [livejournal.com profile] caitlin pointed out he did do his time in prison. I'm all for giving people a second chance so I don't have a problem with him making a living playing football.

I don't know about letting him have a dog, though.
