They're essentially big herding dogs with herding dog personalities, and very short legs. They only get to about 25 lbs, but . . . they never have "little dog" personalities.

They're very smart, but very bossy, and easy to spoil.

Here are some pics of DJ with her friends Chelsea (a mutt like DJ) and Gwynnie (full corgi).

You'll see another one at http://www.frap.org. That one (Cali) rode in the cab in the BABN contingent in the pride parade! A major difference between Gwynnie and Cali is that Gwynnie's had no training, and as nifty a dog as he is, he's a little shit with no manners most of the time. Cali's been well trained since she was a puppy, and is very polite. With corgis (as with most herding dogs) that makes a world of difference.

(They're born tailless, incidentally.)

ahh, so the "Einette" is a corgi, I wondered but was in the cuteness overload.

You know, I havent ever heard anything bad about this breed (other than they need training and a firm hand). Eventually I plan to get out of apartments and into a house with room for a dog. I'm now learning towards (ah the joys of daydreaming) corgis or a female mastiff.

It looks like a corgi puppy to me, and I can't find anything on the web about something called an "Einlette," so . . . I think so.

What qualities would you want in a dog?

off the cuff?

-patient
-loyal (but not like chows, I've loved the ones I had but their dedication makes ppl nervous)
- good with kids and other animals
- smart
- responds well to training (heel, sit, stop, get the leash
- social but not needy
- not hyperactive (ie like the jack russells)
- sense of humor

I'm not sure how I feel about barking because I think it's normal for dogs to bark, I'd hate to have to curb the barking because of crabby neighbors tho.

DJ's a chow mix, and she's loyal but not obsessive. Her primary "fault", if there is one, is the typical chow unwillingness to get close to anyone besides family. It's as if her labrador assets cancel out her "negative" chow aspects, and vice versa. Some mixes end up being the worst of both worlds, but most end up being a happy medium.

You might consider a mix, and adopting through a rescue agency that fosters the dogs, and gets a good idea of their personalities. That way, you get to talk to someone who's known the dog for awhile, you get to hang out with the dog and see what it's like, and you save someone from getting put down.

makes it hard to go on away for a weekend with a non-family member to watch them.

I used to have both chows and labs and collie, but I grew up wth a standard poodle watch over me and shepherdng me around the house.

Thanks for the reminder, the rescue agency is my first choice (I used to work at a pet shop during college, ending up with taking home the unadoptable cat) even though a puppy is the fantasy ideal. I've pretty much always dopted rescued animals ...

In the anime Cowboy Bebop, one of the characters is a Corgi named Ein.

Nothing is weirder than watching your spouse hyperventilate while trying to pet a picture of a dog on a monitor.

Thanks! :P

The fiancee and I had been talking about getting a puppy a few months from now if a dogsitting stint (now in progress) went well.

Now I'll probably get to Saturday, give back the cute dogsittee to their owners, print out that image and go "Buy a puppy like this. Please. Now. *giant puppy dog eyes*". =P
