Date: 2003-07-02 08:03 am (UTC)They're very smart, but very bossy, and easy to spoil.
Here are some pics of DJ with her friends Chelsea (a mutt like DJ) and Gwynnie (full corgi).

You'll see another one at http://www.frap.org. That one (Cali) rode in the cab in the BABN contingent in the pride parade! A major difference between Gwynnie and Cali is that Gwynnie's had no training, and as nifty a dog as he is, he's a little shit with no manners most of the time. Cali's been well trained since she was a puppy, and is very polite. With corgis (as with most herding dogs) that makes a world of difference.

Date: 2003-07-02 05:36 pm (UTC)You know, I havent ever heard anything bad about this breed (other than they need training and a firm hand). Eventually I plan to get out of apartments and into a house with room for a dog. I'm now learning towards (ah the joys of daydreaming) corgis or a female mastiff.

Date: 2003-07-02 05:49 pm (UTC)-patient
-loyal (but not like chows, I've loved the ones I had but their dedication makes ppl nervous)
- good with kids and other animals
- smart
- responds well to training (heel, sit, stop, get the leash
- social but not needy
- not hyperactive (ie like the jack russells)
- sense of humor
I'm not sure how I feel about barking because I think it's normal for dogs to bark, I'd hate to have to curb the barking because of crabby neighbors tho.

Date: 2003-07-02 05:57 pm (UTC)You might consider a mix, and adopting through a rescue agency that fosters the dogs, and gets a good idea of their personalities. That way, you get to talk to someone who's known the dog for awhile, you get to hang out with the dog and see what it's like, and you save someone from getting put down.

Date: 2003-07-02 06:22 pm (UTC)makes it hard to go on away for a weekend with a non-family member to watch them.
I used to have both chows and labs and collie, but I grew up wth a standard poodle watch over me and shepherdng me around the house.
Thanks for the reminder, the rescue agency is my first choice (I used to work at a pet shop during college, ending up with taking home the unadoptable cat) even though a puppy is the fantasy ideal. I've pretty much always dopted rescued animals ...
