This is what is coming off the tree in the backyard.

They're not quinces. They're quava.

Crap. These are tougher to make into anything but juice - and these are the wrong variety for that.

Maybe jam. Maybe.

These get juiced and frozen. Drat. Maybe I can find something useful to do with these.

THIS tree is scheduled for replacement. Definitely.

Are they not guava, with a G? ^^;; How can you tell it's the wrong variety for juice? O_o Pickled or dried guava is yummy! Fresh is pretty nice too ^_^

guavas?

You mean like cracked seed and stuff, or something different?

Heh, I had to look up "cracked seed" on the net XD Yes, that's the sort. Guava peel & guava slices. Yum!

Guava juice is said to be cooling too =)

That sounds good. I like mixing up 7-Up/Sprite with Guava Juice, as is. Good stuff.

Hey now, there's nothing wrong with eating guava raw and fresh, like a pear or something. Although, I don't think I've had any outside of Taiwan, so I have no idea how good those will be.

I'm spoiled - my first fresh guava was in Waipio Valley -

And these guys are yellow to green, no color inside and *sour* - not to mention, stinky.

Good old MCP Pectin has a recipe for jelly - here I come!

These guys are nowhere near as nice as guava should be. However, once introduced to hot water and lemon juice, began to smell less like ass and more like something you'd want in your mouth.

Hoping making jelly out them will reform them.

Those are pineapple guava, and they're tasty.

I think with some better care, these might be in the future. That poor tree didn't get fertilized at all last year and not nearly enough water -

And 5 lbs. of them made some damn fine smelling jelly. Seven 1/4 pints - they'll make wonderful Christmas gifts.

*grin*

You need recipes for guava jam? ^_^ We have lots of guava-related recipes in a local cookbook.

when you can't make lemonade... try sorbet?

Hrm - can you juice them, add sugar, and make sorbet? That will help with a "sweet-sour" kinda candy effect. And making sorbet is just so darned easy it's silly. You could also mix them with another flavor, a "blend" to help? Like strawberry-quava?

I'll take whatever you care to offer - let me know if you've tried any you like in particular.

These are real astringent - and I wish they came on nearer to summer - that's a good idea. But not with winter coming on.

I wish this was a strawberry-guava tree - but I tried the jelly this morning, and it's actually good!

Astringent, eh? Hm... I'm envisioning the "grapefruit to the face" scene from the godfather. Leave on for five minutes, and then wash and moisturize! Tee hee - floating guava in your bathtub. :)

Okay, now I'm not confused anymore. My experience with quinces has always been that they have a lovely, flowery smell. I was having a hard time picturing stinky quinces. Now that I know, I don't have to attempt to shift that part of my worldview. :D

Heeeey! Guavas take over anything they're put in - pungent is more like it! And it is a sharp, planty smell - not pleasant at all.

Have you got any of your old contacts for escrow-related placement agencies left? [livejournal.com profile] ceolyn is looking - and could use the help.

I really wish you were still back there.

I don't think so - these guavas have a distinct "goo" component. Say, if okra was 10, these would be 8 -
