Amazing.

[livejournal.com profile] relevantpink, how far is Thomasville from you folks in GA? [livejournal.com profile] alton_brown says the Sweet Grass Dairy makes the best cheese east of the Mississippi, and I believe him.

If you didn't know what a total cheese nut I am, you do now. Living in Switzerland will do that to do. Being a junior member of the Cheese Club when I was 17 likely had something to do with it - yes, I was the kind of kid who ordered brie through the mail. I luuuurve Brie. With white wine. And goat cheese, dried cranberries, walnuts and greens with some vinaigrette rocks my socks any day of the week.

So with my newfound bonus, I'm ordering some cheese goodness for me. From Georgia. Hey, I'm from California - I know it's the cheese.

And [livejournal.com profile] alton_brown? I'm beginning to think he's my long-lost twin, separated at birth. Yes, he's annoying. Yes, he happens to be right - so how can you get mad for long? That penchant for process, the attention to the minute details...I'd wager he's either Danish or Swiss, ethnically. What he has to say about euphemisms in public schools had me rolling on the floor....

We went to the TRW Swap Meet (the Ham Radio Club's "bring out yer dead" swap meet) - and picked up the neatest little trinket - a lighter with its own cigarette case incorporated into it - easily 50 years old. I'll refurbish it, fill it with Noh incense sticks and carry it around with me. SO cool. Jim found a good pair of binoculars, and another network card for the laptops - Cedric found his carbide bits - I found a cuticle nippers. And we had breakfast/lunch at Norms.

It's been a good day.

You should read the Lanford Wilson play "Book of Days." A murder mystery/social commentary set against the backdrop of a cheese factory. Really. With a dollop of Joan of Arc. Interesting stuff.

Thomasville is in way-south Georgia...near Vidalia, Waycross, Hahira, and Plains. 'Gators, palmettos, and Spanish moss..the closest largish city is probably Tallahassee, FL. About a four or five hour drive from Atlanta.

Last thing I expected to get out this experience was a geographical knowledge of Georgia, but there you go.

The UPS tracking was a trip on the box I sent -

You'd have loved the episode of Grill Maestros I saw today. Guy made serious cheese burgers. Started off with a thick chopped sirloin patty on the grill, topped with a handful of shredded cheddar, then goat cheese, then blue cheese, then mozzarella, then a big slice of brie, straight off the wheel. Then tricolored bell peppers, tri-colored tomatoes, mushrooms, bacon and a fried egg. It was complete overkill. The thing was about a foot high.

Yeah, he talks about all these cheeses, and I'm thinking he's going to put a different cheese on each burger and then he starts piling all of them on one patty and then slaps on the bacon and egg - by that point I was laughing hard enough to scare the cats.

There are some nice goat cheeses made here in Texas. I know that's not the image we have, but they actually raise goats and sheep around San Antonia.

yum

I typically put muenster or provolone on sandwiches. If I want plain cheese to eat, it's either the sharpest cheddar I can find or smoked gouda ... *drools*

I still use my 1974 Radio Amateur Handbook :-)

And ya wonder why I think you'd make a great next door neighbor....

No kidding. We would be exchanging cheese curds over the fence :-)

and now I feel even sillier -- I slept through an appointment to go to the TRW swap meet this morning because I was up too late last night.

And I adore cheese. :)
