Because I'm up, and it's easy -
May. 7th, 2006 08:17 amA very late Friday Five.
1) Do you like your birth-name? Why?
It's a love-hate relationship. I'm the third of four children, who all have the same initials for both first and middle names. I'm also the only one NOT named after anyone. (Sis got the Elizabeth for her middle name, and I've dubbed everyone called Elizabeth "Pookie" in revenge. When my niece was born, and given the Elizabeth for her middle name, there were 15 Elizabeths in the family tree on both sides she was being named for. My Elaine? *crickets chirping* I maintain I was named after the hurricane that went through Dade County in 1960. It makes as much sense as anything else.
2) If you could change your name to anything else, what would it be?
Fred.
Nah. If you know my history about me and my name, you know that I take a great deal of pride in what I have (and what I have is long and a living memorial to two men at the very least) and I wouldn't change a thing.
3) What names would you consider giving your children?
I always loved Amber Rose for a girl, however, I'm not getting a good feeling holding that one for the coming adoption.
Current front-runners are Sora Rose Elaine for the girl, and Alexander-Paul de Silva for the boy.
4) If you had a band, what would you name it, and why?
If I ever had a band, you should all fear.
5) Is there a name that you completely hate? Why?
Names out of cultural context - say, Robina for a girl here. That's Jim's grandmother's name. Dollena is another one that I think would not do well in Los Angeles, and that's an aunt's name. (She uses her middle name for professional purposes.)
Wolfgang is a nifty name. Here, it might not do so well. Cliff wanted that, or Thor. No kidding.
Hate's a pretty strong word. "Not a really good idea" might come closer to it.

Date: 2006-05-07 08:24 pm (UTC)Alexander-Paul de Silva is a very unique name. Is it from a novel or some other cultural reference with which I'm not familiar? I'm wondering if "Alexander-Paul" is the first name (since it's hyphenated) and if "de Silva" is the middle name or if "Alexander" is the first name and "Paul de Silva" is the middle. My only thought on giving this to a child is that it might be difficult for him to fill out all those forms with little boxes for "first, middle, last name" that are so incredibly common in school and throughout life (like IRS forms, etc).
Sora Rose Elaine is quite pretty. Is Sora a cultural name or a family name? It reminds me of "Sorsha" from the movie "Willow" with Val Kilmer and Joanne Whalley. This is a very pretty. :)
I think it's really interesting that you've chosen two middle names for your children. Is that common in California? Here in the south most people only get one middle name. Somehow I feel cheated. Heh heh :)
Again, congrats on the upcoming adoption! Very exciting!

Date: 2006-05-08 04:11 pm (UTC)Alexander has a LOT - a LOT of connotations in both Jim and I's history. Paul, comes from a promise I made back in the day when Cliff and I got stuck in a strike in Athens, and we were helped by a lifesaver named Pavlo, a Cypriot, who was working as a travel agent there. The rest? Heh. Cool names are where you find them -
Sora is Japanese, but is one of those that can be given to both genders. It reminds me a lot of Sara, or Sierra, two other names I'm fond of...but in this case, it feels right. Not questioning it.
As far as the genders - we plan to adopt a girl from China this year, wait and year and adopt a boy from Taiwan. Very planned, our family. Didn't intend to make it quick this lock-step, but going this route, it ends up that way very quickly. This is our agency. You might want to take a look!
