You've heard about the earthquake in China, right?

Am I the only one who remembers someone, sometime in my elementary school history class, mentioning that there had been an earthquake in China, much the same magnitude - before the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco? Bueller?

We're okay. We're also ready for a quake. I'm going to be checking supplies everywhere today, just in case.

This is what we look like right now.

Here's a reasonably good tracker of aftershocks across the world ongoing.

That's what their area looks like, historically.

I have to hand it to the new outlets I've been checking today. No mention of the Olympics, adoption, overindustrialization, contamination - what have you.

I do expect to hear more when I get to work, natch. Speaking of which - gotta go.

A lot of quake preparedness is stuff we already do... I bbq. I camp. I have more food than will fit in my kitchen. I also live 1200 feet from the San Andreas.

Camping gear, bbq supplies, and the pantry are all where they can be accessed after a major quake.

The Northridge Quake

At the time, [livejournal.com profile] chronovius and I were working the Renaissance Faire and attending the occasional SCA war. Because of this, our crate of cooking gear was in the living room, next to the sofa, by the front door. It was convenient, out of the way, and easy to pack'n'go.

So, the quake hit, stuff fell off shelves and walls, and when things settled down enough to convince us that it was okay to grab something out of our apartment, we grabbed the cooking box, because it had the stove, propane and kettle. We made coffee and cocoa for our 12 unit apartment complex. A little island of "I can cope with a hot beverage" when everyone's nerves were shattered.

Y'know, oddly enough, emergency preparedness was the major reason I have decided to continue playing in the SCA. Yes, it can be fun (now and then) - but it can also be particularly trying in spots also like any social group.

But having ready-to-load gear that would enable me to live virtually on any small piece of flat ground for a week - hurricane evac, or whatever - is priceless for my peace of mind after Rita here in south Texas.

I didn't learn about the famous quake in China in elementary school. I learned it in my college geology class.

We also learned about other famous quakes in China that killed nearly millions. Some as recently as the 1970s. Many people died because they were building their houses from a rock that dissolves with serious vibrations. And unfortunately, China's full of that particular rock (I forget the name of it).

I've been listening to NPR. Two of the commentators are in China on assignment anyway and were interviewing a priest in his church when the quake hit. Very striking commentary on the immediate action, and later, the lady was reporting about how it's night time and everyone is outside, waiting and playing cards to pass the time. She also saw a school collapse and was audibly upset, reporting about the kids that died...

Anyway, I wish you guys on the West Coast the best of luck. I hope any aftershock is minor...

A Chinese cousin of mine told me about the quake in the '70s. She said buildings swayed back and forth like they were made of rubber. We giggled because she said she slept through it all, but then got serious because many many people died in that quake.
