Things I've learned today -

One, 800 mg of ibuprofen, every four hours, will knock down just about anything.
Two, a pain level of that kind is something I shouldn't try to think coherently through - and be surprised at the results.
Three, the size 14 pants are heading to the same place the 16's went a few weeks ago - and this time, I'm shocked. If I have to go down to size 10s, I am going to be pissed. I've spent the budget I had for clothes this year already, and since I've NEVER worn 10s, even at 95 lbs, I thought it was a safe bet to get 12s and call it a job well done. No folks, I don't like shopping. I am so NOT A GIRL.
Four, the B-cup bras were nice while they lasted. Yeah, in a sport bra, I might as well be twelve years old. HELLO KIMONO WHERE IT DON'T MATTER. My next mammogram is going to be fuuuuuuuun. (Take your forearm. Pinch whatever you can. THAT'S what's going to be x-rayed. Yay me.)
And I've resumed another feature from my childhood - an annoying "thwock" while walking as my left hip jumps out of alignment. Doesn't hurt - yet - but there you go. It did dislocate painfully when I was eleven or so from time to time...that, and the ankles falling out from under me and me hitting the ground, looking up? Yeah, it was great to be double-jointed. Let me tell you about it sometime. ;)
Hmm. I should see if I can touch the back of my head with my feet again.
When I make Lifetime, I think I'll go take that "elderly ballet" class I got info on those years ago.

Date: 2006-10-24 08:09 pm (UTC)always good in moderation, but I do agree, 800mg goes to work nicely. :)

Date: 2006-10-24 09:10 pm (UTC)And actually, the dramatic weight loss, even if it's a result of exercise and better eating, would worry me along with the pain. I know you had a checkup a while ago and most stuff was kosher, but it wouldn't hurt to phone your PCP and ask what s/he thinks of dropping one whole dress size in less than a couple of months, plus the persisting aches. Sometimes doctors miss things, despite their best efforts not to.

Date: 2006-10-24 09:24 pm (UTC)I was teeny, growing up - walked into high school at 5'3" and 71 pounds. This whole loosing bit is a totally new experience for me!

Date: 2006-10-24 09:34 pm (UTC)With moderate to vigorous exercise 5 times a week, and a sensible diet, you should lose no more than 1 lbs a week. If you can't make time for all that, the rate of loss is gonna be somewhat slower (frex - I've been working out 2-3 times a week and doing a better job of watching what I eat and when for almost 2 months, and am just now getting around the 8 lbs mark, and that's after an initial gain of about 3-4 lbs as fat turned into muscle).
More dramatic weightloss than that suggests that either you're losing muscle mass (which is bad at any age, but especially if you're not a kid anymore), or that there is something else at work that's making the weightloss speed up. Considering the fact that you've been feeling acky lately, I'd worry about the latter, that's all.

Date: 2006-10-24 10:36 pm (UTC)Biggest losses were back in 1995 when Cliff first got diagnosed with the MIA and blunt strokes with seizures - I think I must have lost ten pounds the first two weeks. Just stopped eating - and that's how I ended up 95 lbs. Under stress, I don't eat. Stress enough and everything bounces. Yay me - yes, I am a weirdo mutant from heck.
The weight came on when I started feeding myself as well as I fed Cliff - what I'm getting a good handle on now is just how much is necessary, routinely. Before? I'd bounce around losing and regaining the same ten pounds - and staying thirty over, with all the fun labs my doctor was unhappy with.
It's the horns and tail coming in - it's the season for it, after all.

Here's where my dentist rules
Date: 2006-10-25 02:28 am (UTC)A couple of years back I had some work done on a molar in my lower jaw the day before my dentist was going out of town for the weekend. So I'm fine on Thursday, and fine on Friday, until noon or so, when I've got pain in my jaw so bad I'm crying on my way home shortly thereafter. I get home and call the dentist's office. His hygienist is in the office, and after I tell her what's going on she's like "Oh, dear, it sounds like you probably have developed an infection. I'm not gonna make any promises, but I'll try to reach [insert Dr's name here] on his cell and see if he agrees".
An hour later, while I'm still in agony, the hygienist calls me back and says "I talked to him, and he said that sounds about right. He talked to [collegue in his practice at the time], and we're getting a prescription together". "Oh, thank you" I say "can I come by to pick it up?". "No need", she says, "I talked to a pharmacist at a Walgreens near your house, and they're gonna start filling the prescription as soon as our fax of it goes through. They said you can go by and pick it up in an hour. Take the painkillers for the next day or so, and the antibiotics for a week. And here's the Dr's cell phone, so you can reach him directly if the pain doesn't subside by Sunday." *dictates #* "I also made an appointment for you so we can look at it when he gets back".
That said, the same dentist is not fond of prescribing painkillers when tylenol will do, even though all the parties involved know that I have very sensitive teeth and gums. Perhaps the problem with Donna's dentist is that whoever delivered the dentist's messages downplayed the severity of the ache?

Date: 2006-10-25 02:17 pm (UTC)The fellow covering just doesn't do root canals. He'd have to refer out for it. And with no other symptoms or x-ray issues - no good reason to jump to those conclusions first.
There's also something to be said for getting OUT of pain to break the cycle - I'm a bit better today, but I'm not going far from a bottle of ibuprofen for a few weeks.
