kyburg: (Christmas)
People are seeing what happens when I am not held captive in front of a computer. Literally, this year? It's a race, and unless I have to be in front of the keyboard? I've everywhere but right now.

Hopefully, it'll settle down after New Years. Cross everything.

Christmas Carols in Perspective.

Apologies upfront, but I'm about to fail about of y'all on the LDB challenge. Sorry!

Enjoy and see you tomorrow!

There is something to be said about knowing you can do a thing...and then actually being able to do it without FAIL showing up.

If I can keep it up, this Halloween costume is going to ROCK. I have some finishing to do on the suit, then build the hood, mittens and I may jettison the spats (just don't see the need and they might encumber more than enhance, neh?)

Halloween Party at preschool is Friday. Have to be ready before then.

On the other hand, I just found out just how much $$$ I 'pushed ahead' to get Halloween paid for on time...erg. If I want something leftover for my birthday, I'm going to have to hustle. (God, I hate it when I shoot myself in the foot.)

And I've bought tickets for all three of us to go see Straight Up No Chaser at the Wiltern in November. *fistpumps* Cheaper than Imagination Movers, cheaper than a sitter - and I think he's going to love it. He certainly likes the iTunes tracks and YouTube of them I found.

If anyone knows of any other live music opportunities (we ARE coming into the best/easiest season to find them) - let me know. Kid REALLY likes it (a four year old who will stop DEAD and listen as long as you will play? Right - ) and it's something we'd be happy to encourage.

And now, back to your Tuesday - already in progress.

The mix I listed in this entry not workee so much.

So here. Pick up this one instead.

From the original post:

You've heard of TJ and Amal, right? My good friend [livejournal.com profile] gallo_de_pelea's pet project - they keep her up nights, hardly shutting up long enough for her to get their stories down to paper...and I hope someday, they'll be on store shelves and paying for her retirement someday.

They're really good boys.

One of the things they tend to do is create soundtracks in their wake, however.

And yeah, I got sucked in. At least three of the tunes on the list would not let me stop working on the mix...so here it is, finally done.

*facesmacks* At least four of the songs are almost as old as I am - and three of them are off one album. A really GOOD album, but still -

This has to be the most laid back mix I've ever heard relative to the project. It's clearly for driving through the night when there isn't much to talk about and plenty to ponder. I remember lots of larks out at night (pick a direction, start driving - have pie, then go home. Arrive home about 3:00 AM the next morning) and this assortment reminds me of the mixtapes we used to make.

*clears throat* This was also when CB radios still worked, I might add.

So here goes - TJ & Amal - Love is Stupid, Funny...and Incredible.

Hope you like it - and I assure you, you'll enjoy the comic even more.

*Does not contain Michael Jackson either.

NPR was playing the theme to "Smokey & The Bandit" on a break this AM.

...

Consider I had just - JUST - gotten my own car for the first time right about then.

I think Burt Reynolds is the only one left.

...and damn if it still didn't sound good. *slaps self*

So, Dog the Bounty Hunter is back on the air.

Yeah, yeah.

Worst part is when they flash the 'music from this AWESOME band you never heard of' right at the end.

And I never remember. But dayim. HAWT stuff I never hear anywhere else.

Damn Dog. Damn, damn, damn....

Get your mac n cheese chops out, Tillamook is having a contest!

You wanna enter. You know you do. I have a ton of really GOOD mac n cheese recipes in my memories from waaay back - it's ubiquitous. Everyone has a good one tucked away somewhere.

*taps chin* Something with chicken and apple sausage, maybe curried. Hmmm.

...

[livejournal.com profile] catsonmars pointed this little bit of information about John McCain at me this morning. Go take a look -

As the widow of a Type I diabetic who would not leave her husband and "get on with her life," I find this appalling. And not a good indicator whatsoever. Two cents.

...

I got the pictures back from the high school reunion - and while they are good pictures, I'm not entirely happy with how I look. I should have put on more makeup, and laid a good moisturizer underneath - it shows that badly when I skip steps in my toilette these days. Not. Happy. Maybe I should start spending a ton of money on my face like Sis does. Or just stop looking in the mirror or at pictures. I do not feel as old as my pictures are looking - and it's not getting better. Developing a sense of vanity at this point just pisses me off as well. Crap.

...

Earworm department: The "Thunderbirds March" and the 5-4-3-2-1 countdown from the top of the show, were adopted by the British band Level 42 for its live shows, as captured in the video release of its 1987 performance at Wembley Stadium in London. An updated version, blended with the opening fanfare to the band's own hit "Heaven In My Hands," kicks off L42's concert gigs to this day. Similarly, the 5-4-3-2-1 countdown has been used by the Beastie Boys for its subsequent live shows; one instance of this is the Live Earth concert in London in 2007.

I WANT. NERD ALERT.

An unexpectedly musical day yesterday.

Heading out to Sis' house for a very small, quiet Easter visit w/dinner - I was given the cook's tour of the new electronics in the house, thanks to "the bonus" for this year.

Two really BIG HD plasma televisions (w/BlueRay DVD players), and a new washer/dryer set. Front-loaders. Much impression had.

But Sis wanted me to hear what the home theater system did with Phantom of the Opera. So, I did.

Wow.

And now I am humming the melodies again...damn earworms. Also proof-positive I stopped learning songs about fifteen years ago by not singing them, hence the incredible amount of frustration trying to do something karaoke. I don't have the stuff loaded in my memory - my actual performance memory.

Don't ask me to sing Phantom songs, though. You do, you get what you deserve. When I can't even sing alone in the car because I can't stand the sound, you've got the clue, right?

THEN - after prime rib, potatoes sopping with greyere cheese and cream, asparagus with hollandaise and homemade cheesecake with hot fudge sauce - I handed off the family to Jim coming off work and went into Hollywood to catch four out of the six acts for Japan Nite at the Knitting Factory.

I may go back there, just to catch acts - it's a GREAT venue. Snagged a table right by the door, with chairs and had a mighty fine time. Bought a CD for Scandal, caught Petty Booka (and I have to give them hutspa points for playing bluegrass ukelele in Hollywood in the middle of a rock/ska/punk set), endured Petty Booka (the chipmunk factor was...just was....) and then really liked Ketchup Mania, liked Detroit 7 just a bit less. (Balancing the bass to create a standing wave in the back NOT cool...thankfully, they corrected that by the last three songs in the set. Ow.)

Went home. Drive home only eventful in that it was late, I was tired and I had to keep reminding myself that I used to drive airport shuttle and this was old home week. Yar, yar, I be tough!

Truly, not a whole lot later to bed than staying up playing games to midnight - a bit more expensive, though.

Get to do it all again Wednesday for Jim's birthday Wednesday - Paul Potts at the Wiltern, doncha know.

I got this album when I was down sick with the Expensive Mystery Poo Disease middle of the summer - matter of fact, I ended up using it almost entirely to keep myself from passing out behind the wheel on the trips I made up and down the 405 to see the Amazing Poo Doctor of Beverly Hills, nearly every day for a week, when I was at my sickest.

The Album? [livejournal.com profile] cadhla's Stars Fall Home.

Probably the first thing I should tell you is that I ordered three more copies as soon it was possible to do so.

The second thing I should tell you is this is the only way I've ever heard Seannan sing. I bought the first album, the one-time live performance from OVFF, Pretty Little Dead Girl because, well, too many people on my FL who had actually been there were about frothing at the mouth over the performance.

The disc did not disappoint - except to whet the appetite for what might come out of the same material, if it could be done in a studio, controlled under those circumstances and given the loving care a talented producer could give it.

Heh.

When I imported the new disc into iTunes, it showed up as "Folk." Well, it's filk - and about things I'm not immediately familiar with and in some case, not interested in at all. No matter.

It's a very mixed bag of style, instruments, arrangements - with an intricate lyrical style. She includes the lyrics in the liner notes. You won't need them. You can read them, of course, when you're aren't listening to the CD - but you won't be guessing at what's being sung. She's just that good at getting the words threaded through the notes - she knows the words matter.

One of the best parts of the album? How well the last track leads into the first one. No kidding. This album can loop forever. Track #15 leads into Track #1 flawlessly - and you feel like you're listening to it again for the first time without noticing that - oh - you're not.

There's the review. Now - onto the critique. Gloves=OFF )
